Nov. 27, 2009 A false reading of history can lead to catastrophic results. Following a long war during China’s spring and autumn period, only seven states -- the Seven Powers of the Warring States Period -- remained before they were finally absorbed by the Qin. That in order to do this Qin perpetuated an age of barbarity unmatched in Chinese history was never mentioned by Mao’s supporters,(both in China and in the west)as he went on to imitate the Qin dynasty; in the process bringing about a reign of terror. The official count of those killed in China outside of warfare, natural disaster and judicial procedure during the communist period is 40 million, the greatest amount during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. A similar misreading of history is the root cause of the US mismanagement of the geopolitical situation. According to it the founding of the US republic out of the thirteen colonies was the turning point in world history, the world having lived in a state of feudalism and colonial oppression until its creation. The fact that they are not viewed as saviors as they enter on to the world stage hurts and offends them. Democracy is not two hundred and fifty years old; it has been around since the days of Aristotle. Looking back on European history it is clear that it has taken a lot longer than two hundred years or so to bring democracy about. All societies have evolved in their own unique fashion and although not always desirable by our own standards work. The US sees instability in the world and right away decides -by jingo let’s go over there and give those poor devils some democracy. What most Americans fail to understand is that democracy and a decent standard of living did not magically occur with the US declaration of Independence, but as a result of 5,000 years of history. That the founding of the US in North America has been so beneficial to its inhabitants while most of the republics in South America are a failure points to the fact that the institutions of the parent country were superior to those of the parent countries of those in the south, not that the US is inherently superior.
For thousands of years stronger nations have colonized weaker ones. This of course is intolerable to the colonized: or so they say. Having lived in colonized countries I can say that this is true in some cases, usually in that of those who have the most to gain from independence, the average Joe not really concerned with politics; in some cases even in favor of their colonial masters as they, in their view, are the lesser of two evils. I can’t help wondering why the US was so intent upon ending the colonial system where the world was in most instances a more stable place, and where she was creating only confusion and instability.
