The Strange Woman

By Brian Michael Barbeito
May 26, 2009

They were supposed to have a connection, and did, but the dark and skinny woman did not honor what the universal mind had meant as a meeting of the minds. Jacob knew this almost from the beginning and was sorry about the woman’s strange choice to turn away from the friendship. She was the first to speak to him in the early days, and told him that the coffee they were about to drink was cold. She was the first to talk about going to see a movie, some strange morning film that they never made it to. At one point a year had passed before they saw one another. She looked at him and said, “So,” in order to tell him to explain what had been happening, but at that point it was far too late, and she didn’t really want to know anyway. Perhaps her unearned jadedness had somehow instilled itself to a degree in Jacob. It was ten or fifteen years later that he had a dream about her, a strange and good dream in which they were as they were meant be. She was around him, and they were talking, and the cloud around her had dissolved because she had chosen to let it. She could see with plain eyes. Upon waking, Jacob tried to remember more details from the dream but could not. He wondered at the dark and skinny woman that liked Star Wars and the Gita, that brooded alone, that had known what to do but chose not to.
