The Synchronistic Frank Smith

By Brian Michael Barbeito
May 20, 2009

Jacob Easton Ellis had Frank Smith on the brain for weeks. Frank Smith was a school friend from childhood that had become a somewhat successful singer. The week that Jacob had seen Frank sing was quite something because Frank’s stage presence reminded Jacob of a real rock and roll hero. Perhaps Jacob was biased or perhaps Frank had somehow been overlooked by the big leagues. In any event, Jacob was listening to the radio, reminiscing and musing about life and all its different colors, pathways, inlets, meanderings positive and otherwise. He was wondering why someone like Frank Smith never got a big time record deal and touring agenda but was rather always relegated to smaller venues and independent labels. At that moment the radio announcer was reading the news and started telling a story about a Frank Smith. It wasn’t the same person, but it was a strange coincidence. These happened every day though, and for the most part they happened multiple times per day. It was Carl Jung that had written about synchronicities, and it was fabulous to ponder that there was a deeper web, a hidden reality that connected things, that provided signposts and symbols. Jacob had read Memories, Dreams, and Reflections by Jung when he was twenty years old and the book had been one of those that had stayed with him, in the background of his thoughts always. The day after the radio show had mentioned the name Frank Smith, Jacob was walking down a downtown street about to turn a corner and go into his favorite deli for lunch. There were hundreds of people around, and the area was full of traffic. Jacob noticed that a black SUV had stopped across the street and that a man was looking at him as if to get his attention. Jacob stopped and nodded as if to tell the man to go ahead and speak. “Where is Frank Smith Road?” asked the man, and Jacob could hardly believe it. Jacob paused a moment and told the man the truth, that he didn’t know a Frank Smith Road. The man thanked him, did a three-point turn, and went off the way he came. Jacob knew that the radio man was simply reading the news of the day and that the man in the SUV was genuinely just a man in the road looking for a street, but it all felt strange nevertheless. Jacob headed towards the deli, smiling at the power of synchronicity.
