Mar. 6, 2009 Two r and b superstars, a celebrity couple, are involved in a brawl (or some sort of disturbance, for those who insist I be “politically correct”), on the night they are to perform together at the Grammy Awards. Later, it is established that the male, Chris Brown, is alleged to have battered his girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, 21. Brown, 19, has yet to be charged with anything resembling felonious assault, but is to be arraigned on suspicion of making criminal threats and is walking around free on a $50,000 bond. The District Attorney is still looking into the case, however, we must remember that this is Los Angeles: Where a washed up actor beat the murder case against his lover; an ex-football player and so-so thespian nearly beheaded his wife and her lover; and a forgotten record producer won an acquittal in what was supposed to be an open and shut case. According to an assortment of sources, Rihanna is rumored to be reluctant about pressing charges and the couple is said to have reconciled and is spending time together at the Miami estate of rap mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Meanhile photos of a battered Rihanna make their way around the internet, as does pictures of Brown seen riding a jet ski, as if he’s done nothing more than swat a meddlesome housefly. In my book, P. Diddy stands for--Pimp; Definitely Interested in Deceiving Dim-witted Youth) with his "samples" and mediocre rapping ability. He is acting as a mediator only because he sees the potential loss of dollars should this talented, but disturbed young man lose his recording contract. The real question is who are the advisors for this young duo? On Rihanna’s side is her father, Ronald Fenty, who--pardon my French--sounds like a real a-----e. According to ABC News, Fenty said, “"Whatever road she chooses, I'm behind her." One of the things I learned from being around battered women and those who treat them is this: If a man hits you once, no matter how fervent or eloquent his apology, chances are overwhelming that he will do it again. Fenty, however, seems to have forgotten that his daughter is but 21, and he thinks that she is capable of making a wise decision, so he has taught her that it’s okay to “take a licking and keep on ticking.” This woman is RICH. She has better access to help than say Wilma the welfare recipient, drug-addicted Drusilla, or Poverty-stricken Paula. She can afford body guards (and body armor) if nothing else. I am not trying to trivialize this, but organizations like STAND and Battered Women's Alternative can get women help, so why doesn't she seek out such help? As for Brown, do you really think anger management will help? He reminds me of the burglar who goes to court and tells the Judge, "I'm sorry," when in reality all he’s saying is, "I'm sorry I got caught. For had I not been..." and you know the rest of the story. I don't feel sorry for Brown or Rihanna, other than the fact that they are young, ignorant and are being ill-advised. Kanye West, rather than encourage Brown to get himself together, was quoted as saying ““Can’t we give Chris a break?” According to theinsider.com, rapper T.I. told Carson Daly, “"Yeah, I spoke to him today. He cool, you know…He's still the same Chris." I feel sorry for their fans who may follow in their footsteps. Then again, I do feel sorry for those two young stars for having such dim-witted parents and advisors. P. Diddy? Give me a break! Now we have the rumored reconciliation. When they say "Love is blind," let's also remember that in some cases it also has a "good chin." Roberto Duran also had a good chin as did Aaron Pryor, and both were considered almost invincible. Eventually both were eventually KO’d. Rihanna is far from invincible, so let’s hope she doesn’t get hit any more at all. ------------ About the author: Timothy N.
