What I Don't Like About XP With Work A Rounds

By Larry G. McMillan
June 26, 2009

First, when you are installing a new version of XP on an old machine it will most likely tell you that the version on the machine is newer than the one you are installing. This is not absolutely true as the version your using probably came with the machine. It is reading the files on the computer and some of the dates were changed when you installed or the OEM installed the software.

It is a simple matter to reinstall, provided you don’t have a machine that has XP installed without a dos partition on it. If there isn’t any dos partition you will have to use the OEM’s disk and it will in most cases erase all the data on the hard drive and reinstall only the original software and drivers. It will however, not install all the ones you so patiently installed that did not come from the OEM. This means you have to reinstall all the other programs you want to use. I have never understood why this has to be so. All the OEM’s have to do is install a partition on the C: drive so that XP can simply reinstall the necessary files it needs to reinstall XP. I have always felt this was a very shortsighted view on Microsoft’s part and was so easy to correct to make all installations easier.

With a small portion of the hard drive available to XP, it can do a reinstall without doing any removal of data from the machine. I found this to be a problem when I first started working with XP and soon knew that to save myself many hours of labor I needed to format the drive with two partitions, one for 32 bit windows and the other for NTFS for XP. I then copy all the XP files from the CD to the C:\Winxp or whatever directory I created for it and ran it from the machine. With this done I could then install other programs and when the XP disk was needed, it was found on the machine and I did not have to go find the CD. It also meant that when I needed to reinstall XP all I had to do is boot to the C drive and go to C:\winxp\I386 and run winnt.exe and I was ready in a short while to use my machine again or a customer had his back with all data intact. However, this is not always the case but as a general rule it usual works. In cases where there is damage to the registry it most likely will not work.

The second problem I have found is with service people. They do their best but they are only as good as the database they are using and the amount of on hands time they have. No matter how much is in a database, there is no substitute for knowledge gained with hands on performance of a piece of software. I have found that in most cases if a person can run XP either from a CD or off their hard drive they can easily reinstall XP and without reinstalling all the other programs. The hitch in this reinstall it ask twice if you want to restore. The first one is if you have created disk and can use them. I however, have never done so and have never met anyone who has so what do you do in this case?

Simple, just go to the second request to restore in the program and it will use the registry and put everything back the way it was. No data lost nor do any programs need to be reinstalled nor drivers. Everything should be back the way it was before.

Running a good virus cleaner at this point would not hurt and if anyone finds one let me know also. I have tired almost all of them and have not found one that I would recommend to anyone. I currently use malwarebytes and noadware together to help keep things running smoothly. I have found that if windows will not run or something else gives me a problem I just run malware and it seems to find the ones that are causing my headaches. No guaranties. Just a simple fact so far.

The biggest problem I have with XP is the reinstallation of Internet Explorer. It always tells me it has a newer version on the machine and I have tried all the work a rounds I can find and none so far that have worked. I have done all the things they have said to do in the registry and every other thing they claim will work but the only solution I have found is to remove IE completely from the registry and to remove it from the hard drive.

This however creates another problem as it also takes out your Outlook Express so if you don’t do a backup before doing this so say long to all your contacts and emails. I have found that the only sure way to be safe is to use a commercial version of an Outlook Express file to be sure all is safe and secure. I have only found a couple that are really good at backing up Outlook.

Once all this is done you can go through the registry and remove all references to IE (Internet Explorer) by using the following command from the start and run area on the lower left menu bar. Type in regedit and press enter, The regedit program should open up the registry so you can edit it. Be sure of what you are doing or you can wipe windows out and have to reinstall it. The best think if you are not sure is to have someone else remove it for you. Be sure they know what they are doing.

Once all that is done and you reboot you should be able to install a new version of IE 6. I cannot figure out why you cannot install IE 6 without it reading the date as you normally use a security version when you put it in any way. Even if you do not the first update will bring it back to where it was before. Some of these quirks of Microsoft’s bug me no end. Such minor things like this that cause people nothing but anguish when they are trying to just reinstall a browser. I suppose they had their reasons but I think they should rethink some of their reasons.
