June 8, 2009 Thomas Keyes is the personification of one who as Mark Twain asserted, uses staitsitics “Like a drunk uses a lamppost: For support rather tham illumination.” His latest diatribe, based on the voting of Nobel Prizes is silly, superficial and downright laughable. Keyes wears his racism like Pentagon officials sport their medals. He’s damn proud of it, too. His so-called “facts” fail to encompass the generalized prejudice inherent in the data he cites. Second, he doesn’t mention the presumed racial make-up of the committee that selects the Nobel Prize. Here’s a hint: The awards committee is based in Sweden . I suggest that real intellectual might would best be measured by s group’s contributions to society. The contributions of black inventors and intellectuals are too numerous to state here, as is the subsequent lawsuits black inventors and intellectuals have won against whites who plagiarized their ideas and infringed upon their copyrights. Keyes likes to argue race based on his idea of what he views as infallible. There is an ingrained need in him to feel superior, perhaps because he lives in countries that are predominantly black, and he has some “Great White Chieftain” complex. Since he likes to speculate about people of color, let me take some liberties with his life. I suspect that back in he 60’s some “soul brother” (a term he might use derisively), whom he dubbed “intellectually inferior,” showed just enough smarts to steal his woman. Now he has spent his latter years venting his pent-up rage by bashing an entire race. Then again, maybe he presented his hair-brained theories before a classroom, had them sliced up by some brother, and he never recovered from it. As the only black student at a school for the gifted, and one who dominated the end-of-the-year awards ceremonies, I’ve seen such scenarios unfold. Keyes, like a former UK columnist before him, is so fixated on race that it clouds his thinking and rather than sounding like a man making an intellectual argument, he comes of as bitter and vengeful. The problem with people like this is that he masquerades these diatribes as honest debate, when they are really nothing more than the clichéd babblings of a tired old man. Thomas has spent at least six years espousing his theories of white intellectual superiority without garnering a smidgen of support from anyone in the UK community. I have seen those of his ilk come and go. They argue that blacks can achieve nothing without the benevolent nod of whites. These are the same people who have turned the words “feminist” and “liberal” into profanities, failing to realize the changes spawned by the feminist and liberal perspective. Still, UK has a place for people like Thomas Keyes, et al. That’s one of the endearing things about the site, it makes room for a diversity of opinions, no matter how inane and shallow. ------------ About the author: Timothy N.
