June 6, 2009 Recently I posted an article about Sonia Sotomayor’s preposterous remark comparing the wisdom of Hispanic women favorably to that of white men. As a consequence, I received an e-mail comparing Sotomayor favorably with George W. Bush, as if I had implied the opposite. I said not a word about Bush and allowed that Sotomayor herself was probably more intelligent than the average Hispanic woman, so the author of the e-mail was pretending to refute an argument that I hadn’t made or intended to suggest. My comments were about average intellectual levels spread over entire populations, not about select individuals that constitute exceptions. Let me state a more visible analogy that the author of this e-mail may be able to comprehend: Among basketball players, 77% are black and 21% are white, although blacks constitute only 13% of the general population, while whites make up 74%. Am I not permitted to generalize and say simply, “Blacks are better basketball players than whites, for the most part.”? Will some egalitarian get annoyed, calling me a racist? http://www.jonentine.com/reviews/PIBasketballFlipOfBaseball.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States However, when it comes to comparing intellectual levels, which, unlike skill in basketball, are not immediately physically apprehensible, if I suggest that there is any difference whatsoever among races or ethnicities, I am almost certain to receive e-mails like the one I mentioned. The author of the e-mail said, “Don't you realize that intelligence and ability have absolutely nothing to do with race or gender?” Later, he added, “The notion that blacks, women, Hispanics, etc., are inherently inferior mentally to white males, especially WASPs, is ludicrous. Let's face it; intelligence and talent have absolutely nothing to do with race, ethnicity or gender. Brilliant people have come from all backgrounds, as well as slack-jawed anti-intellectuals.” Incidentally, my original article did not use the acronym WASP at all. These remarks demonstrate a total lack of observational and deductive powers on the part of the author of the e-mail, for intelligence and talent have much to do with race and ethnicity, just as basketball prowess does. I realize that is de rigueur to pretend that this is not so. It is politically correct to deny it. Hypocritical leaders do a good job at brainwashing credulous followers. Let me compare some very crude figures concerning Black, Hispanic and Jewish Nobel laureates, which demonstrate almost incredibly wide differences in intelligence and talent. Note that I am not Black, Hispanic or Jewish, so I can be dispassionate and impartial. I haven’t been able to find world populations by race or ethnicity. But I can make some rough estimates. The population of Africa is 1,000,000,000. If we suppose that 70% are black and that there are 100,000,000 blacks outside of Africa, we can estimate that the world total is 800,000,000. As you will see, it won’t make any difference if this figure is off by as much as 25%. Similarly, we can produce an approximate figure for Hispanics. The population of Latin America is 560,000,000. If we subtract 200,000,000 for Brazilians, who are not Hispanic, but add 90,000,000 for Spaniards in Spain and Hispanics in America, we arrive at a world Hispanic population of 450,000,000, and again this could easily be 25% in error without changing the tenor of my argument, as will be evident. These lists may not be entirely concurrent, so it may be necessary to adjust the laureate headcount by 2 or 3 in one or the other of the cases. But it doesn’t matter, as you will see. Blacks have won 11 Nobel prizes. Hispanics have won 12. (One per 73,000,000) 450,000,000 Hispanics win 12 prizes. (One per 38,000,000) 13,000,000 Jews win 155 prizes. (One per 84,000) So Jews win Nobel prizes with 867 times the frequency that Blacks do and with 447 times the frequency that Hispanics do, on a pro-rata basis. There are undoubtedly some modifications that could be made in the light of the old standard rationalizations propounded by egalitarians, like discrimination and poverty, but, on the whole, the picture is very clear: Jews are more intelligent than Blacks or Hispanics. In my original article, I mentioned that the average IQ’s of Blacks, Hispanics and Jews are 85, 90 and 115 respectively. This is not something I invented. I have seen these figures many times and won’t even bother to provide links. What’s more, the figures are in agreement with my own personal judgment. I find it just as easy to say that Jews are smarter than Blacks as it is to say that Blacks are more athletic than Jews. This has nothing to do with me. Calling me a bigot, a racist, a hater or an ignoramus, as several correspondents have, is only a casuistry whereby to seem to dismiss my statements without having to deal with the facts. The psychodynamics at work is this: He’s just a bigot, so everything he says can be discounted. But I’d like to hear the explanations for this phenomenon that the author of the e-mail might make. Let me sum up by saying that race and ethnicity have much to do with intellectual ability. There’s nothing under the sun that necessitates that this be otherwise.
