July 2, 2009 As a follow up to my original article and tribute to Michael Jackson some new information has come to light. I wanted to address a particular drug mentioned in connection with MJ even though this is still in the rumor category until the toxicology report into his death has been released. Use of drugs such as Oxycontin and Demerol are not unusual these days and have long been known to be a leading cause of death by overdose. It is also not unusual for certain doctors to prescribe such drugs in abundance to the rich and famous. They often prescribe these particular drugs in outrageous doses and with the full knowledge that their patients are addicted. Sometimes, people "doctor shop" in order to receive these drugs in large quantities and one doctor doesn't know what another is prescribing. There are also pharmacies that are fully aware of the dangerous doses that some patients are receiving as they fill these prescriptions. They are obligated to report the misuse of drug dosages and over prescribing by any doctor that violates the law. Often, they do NOT do so. There is a complicity of blame and responsibility on the part of all involved when it becomes obvious that a patient is exhibiting the behavior of an addicted person. This also extends to those surrounding the addict who are referred too as "enablers". I cite previous cases such as the death of Anna Nicole Smith and even as far back as the death of Elvis Presley when stating that many hold a certain amount of responsibility when the patient eventually dies of what is deemed an "Accidental drug over-dose". In the case of Michael Jackson, it is rumored (and I want to stress that nothing has been stated as fact when attributing any drug or drugs to his sudden death as of yet), a particular drug has been brought up that is absolutely horrifying and hard to even imagine as something that may have contributed to his death. The drug, Diprivan, is a Propofol variant. It's painful when injected and is generally administered after pre treatment with Lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Propofol can cause cardiac arrest when used in combination with narcotic painkillers or in excessive quantities and is only available in hospitals. This is used during surgical procedures under controlled conditions and given by highly experienced individuals who are members of the medical profession. If in fact, Michael Jackson was using this drug as a sleep aid without the proper medical protocol and supervision necessary, he was heading down an almost definite path to death. Many of us have been given this drug during both out-patient and in-patient procedures and while under the care of a licensed anesthesiologist. Usually there are two parties responsible in overseeing the administration of this medication and it carries with it a huge risk factor. All of us who have been administered this drug have signed a waiver of responsibility and have acknowledged that we have been informed of the risk associated with the administration of this particular drug. Diprivan is known as "Milk of Anesthesia" in the medical community and NO ethical doctor would prescribe or provide it to an individual for use outside of an operating room or an ICU setting. If in fact someone did this, they are heading for a world of hurt including a possible charge of manslaughter. It is probably already known to both the Los Angeles Coroners office and the Jackson family (through the results of their requested second private autopsy), what the cause of Michael's death really was. I suspect that the family is holding back the information until Michael has been buried and the tributes to him are over. The coroners office will not release the results until the examination of the brain are complete as this is standard protocol and that can take from 4-8 weeks. The toxicology results come in much sooner than the brain studies and that is why these things take so long. We will have to wait for the rumors and innuendoes to be proven right or wrong to have a complete and real cause of why Michael Jackson died suddenly from Cardiac arrest without any known history of heart trouble or any signs of "natural causes" apparent in his physical examination upon autopsy. Sadly, this will allow more time for the rumors to multiply and that is unfortunate as it most definitely causes great pain to his family and friends. Michael Jackson's legacy will probably not be tarnished in the long run by any findings of cause of death no matter how illegal or irresponsible on his part because of the contributions that he made in a positive way to our culture. I believe that people will allow Michael's genius to supersede the negative aspects of his life. What should not be swept aside is the cautionary tale that his death may tell all of us. If in fact Michael Jackson died as a result of abusing prescription drugs it should be noted and discussed as this has become a huge cause of death in the United States and elsewhere. This is not something that can be solely attributed to the rich and famous. Everyday, there is someone dying from the abuse of prescription drugs and everyday many of our children are raiding our medicine cabinets to get these sometimes powerful and dangerous drugs.
If it is proven that Michael Jackson did die of drug abuse let that also be a part of his legacy and let it not be over-looked. Perhaps he can than leave even more to his multitude of fans that will be just as valuable (or even more so), then his musical legacy.
