There are many types of Depressive Illnesses, for it is an illness, one that takes many forms. Some of the more prevalent being:

Manic Episodes ; Bi-Polar Disorder; Severe Depressive Disorder (Psychological AND Physiological in Nature); SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder); Milder Forms with listlessness, lack of care in hygiene or personal issues, crying binges or personality changes.

Dealing with depression and all of its problems can be a rough road with many bumps. There is hope for those that suffer with this more common than you'd think issue. Depression comes with many facets and symptoms. Some of the obvious ones are; Lack of appetite or interest in activities, suicidal thoughts or actions, closing oneself off from family and friends, giving away personal items, insomnia or sleeping too much, crying easily, highs and lows in behavioral patterns, mood swings and getting easily upset or angry for little reason. Some of these can signal a Manic Depressive Disorder or Bi-Polarism.

There are physical symptoms as well; stomach and abdominal pain and or cramps, headaches, nausea, back pain, muscle aches - a lot of these are also symptoms of the flu, or mirror other diseases, so they can be misdiagnosed fairly frequently. In combination with psychological symptoms, these depressive illnesses can be debilitating and keep you from work, personal responsibilities and family obligations. They can cause you to shutdown and withdraw from friends and others that care about you.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should seek medical counsel immediately, especially for any suicidal thoughts. There are many ways to effectively treat these illnesses such as medication, therapy, counseling or a combination of treatments put together by you and your Doctor. Most can be done as an out-patient and with the strictest of privacy in effect. Be proactive in your own therapy and ask questions about anything that you may be unsure of or uncomfortable with.

Many new medications are being tested and approved for these conditions with good results. There may also be natural ways such as increased exercise, eating properly, getting enough rest, proper sunshine (Vitamin D), supplements and or herbals in moderation that may help. Always tell your Doctor what you are taking and check labels, the internet and consult with your Pharmacy Tech to make sure that you do not take medications that may interact badly with each other.

There are community and hospital programs designed specifically to deal with depression symptoms and therapy options. There are also crisis hotlines for emergency situations when you need immediate assistance.

Living with depression and its aftereffects can be difficult, but when you are better, you will find that it has all been worth it and that you are functioning as a happier and more stable individual.

I am speaking from experience - for I have SAD. With proper medication and therapy, I have begun to enjoy life again and to reach out to others in the same situation.
