July 25, 2009 Now the real story of what went on during Professor Gates arrest is coming to light. Sgt. Crowley is not a racist, By now most people who have been following this story know he taught a course actually called Racial Profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy. He was chosen for that position specifically by former police commissioner Ronny Watson, who just happens to be a black man. I am unimpressed with myself. And although I will be the first one to say I'm sorry, I do have a justifiable defense, one that has been substantiated time and time again. The proven, documented history of racism and racial profiling has been a serious problem for years in police forces across the country. Doesn't that count as an understandable motivator for all the bally-hoo over the Gates arrest? Yesterday after I wrote my piece I felt good about it. I was sure that between then and now we'd start to see a long line of people coming forward with past claims of racism against Sgt.Crowley, I was waiting for them. Nothing. Not a word. What did come out of the woodwork was an incident from back in the day when Sgt. Crowley gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to Reggie Lewis, a basketball player who had a heart attack and who was also a black man. Oh oh. I'm sorry Sgt. Crowley for thinking the confrontation and subsequent arrest of Professor Gates was motivated by race. I truly am. But that doesn't mean your not a power tripper ya know! And until you teach a course called Power Tripping and the Community at the Lowell Police Academy I'm not changing my mind. Who arrests a man who stands just over 5 feet, weighs just over 130lbs. and uses a cane? In his own home? A power tripper! But that's okay, you've no doubt paid the price. It must be disheartening to be perceived as a racist when all you are is an idiot, so once again I apologise.
As for Professor Gates, today I heard someone accusing you of choosing
the wrong cop to call a racist, of using the race card to instigate the
kind of reaction we've all been witnessing. I can only hope that's not
true. I'm just saying, right?
