July 8, 2009 Almost all of the great inventions that have made modern life what it is have been elaborated by scientists and engineers of Euro-American extraction, that is, by European men or American men of European extraction. Anyone who tries to pretend that all races and ethnic groups are equally represented in the inventors’ pantheon is, in a word, lying, There are been very few people of Black, Hispanic, Amerindian, Asian or Pacific extraction who have made significant contributions to technology and science. Likewise, there have been very few women. A few notable examples should suffice to illustrate this important point. The man credited with invention of the automobile is Karl Benz. One need only read his name and see his picture to appreciate that he is a European. He was not Black, Hispanic or Polynesian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Benz Someone may object that this is unfair, that Benz was the beneficiary of accidents of geography and history, and that the car might have been invented in Africa as well. But the fact remains that the automobile was a German brain-child. The men credited with the invention of modern-type aircraft are Wilbur and Orville Wright, American born men probably of Anglo.Saxon ancestry, that is, Euro-Americans according to the definition I am using. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wright_brothers Perhaps someone will say that the association crediting the Wright brothers with the invention comprises mainly Euro-American members, who would naturally have a Eurocentric bias, and that a Black aeronautical association would make a different selection. Very well, show me a Black aeronautical association, and inform me of their choice. Another invention of immense importance today was the transistor, one of whose co-inventors was William Shockley, a Nobel laureate in physics and an American of obvious Anglo-Saxon extraction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shockley A Google search will quickly reveal that Walter Brattain and John Bardeen, Shockley’s collaborators, were also Euro-Americans. Puerto Ricans invented maracas, rattles made of gourds, and piña colada, a mixed drink. Can we compare these with cars, planes and transistors? Alan Turing is widely considered the father of modern computer science, although of course many men have made improvements and refinements. Turing was a white Englishman, and I would be willing to wager that the majority of researchers who have contributed to the development of computers were Euro-Americans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing Going through Wikipedia’s history of computers, one will find that the illustrious scientists and engineers taking part in the process were Euro-American to a man. There were no Blacks or Latinos involved at all. Another great inventor was Thomas Edison, who invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera and the light bulb, among other things. He was an American of obvious Anglo-Saxon extraction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison And the list goes on, into the dozens, hundreds, perhaps even thousands, when we consider radio, television, refrigeration, modern water treatment, trains, power tools, cell phones, satellites, spaceships, modern highways. The brains behind all of these devices were Euro-American brains. What I can’t understand is why people like Sonia Sotomayor and Eric Holder, and possibly Barack Obama himself, exhibit such antipathy to the men who have been most beneficial to them. If it were not for the grace of Euro-American ingenuity, Sonia Sotomayor might have had to ride in the back of an ox-drawn cart in Puerto Rico today. Eric Holder might have been a fisherman with a canoe in some seaside village in the Barbados .
