Jan. 25, 2009 Politically, I am a moderate and I do not vote
along party lines. I vote for the man I think will best serve the United States.
I have voted for Democrats and Republicans and one time, for an Independent
candidate.
We now have a liberal President who promises to fix what
ails us in short order. I doubt that there is a quick fix to problems that took
many years to present themselves and I doubt that we have a Congress with enough
guts and lack of self interest to pass laws that will help the average American.
Having said that, I do wish President Obama good luck and
I do hope that he succeeds providing that he doesn't turn us into a Socialist
Nation. I do not believe that socialism has worked anywhere and I firmly believe
that it won't work here either.
I felt that George W. Bush made many errors of judgment
during his eight year presidency but I also appreciate how he handled the attack
on our country and that he managed to keep us safe for the rest of his term
after 9/11. For that, I thank him and was saddened to hear the nasty booing that
ensued during the inauguration of President Obama.
Having lived through several presidential terms and having
voted since 1963 I was amazed to see the response of much of the American public
over candidate and now President Obama. It was more of an anointing than a
swearing in ceremony and aside from the historical context of him being the
first mixed race President, I don't get the awe and worship of a mere
mortal.
I don't vote by race and I don't want a country that is
swayed by the fact that America "did the right thing" regarding race rather than
the "right thing" regarding qualifications and experience.
What President Obama will accomplish remains to be seen
and anyone that wishes him harm or failure in his endeavors is not looking out
for the best interests of our country. We must hope that he can unite,
restore and renew the values that we hold dear and that make this country great.
I personally wanted to say thank you to President Bush for
the good things that he accomplished and to wish him well in his future. I do
not believe that it is necessary to bash the former President in order to
support the current one and it angers me that some people feel it necessary to
completely negate all that Bush did that was positive in order to believe that
Obama will save us from the past.
If we pay more attention to the body that actually passes
laws and over-sees the nation we might be better off and it will be time well
spent rather than focusing on what Bush did wrong. I fault the Congress (both
Republican and Democrat) for many of our current economic troubles and I
personally plan on watching carefully what they do and fail to do to right the
wrongs of the past...many of them, the sole responsibility of the Congress
rather than any one President and his administration.
Good luck President Obama and goodbye and thank
you President Bush. You will both be judged by history as to whether or not
you were failures or successes in the grand scheme of things.
