Feb. 16, 2009 As we all know by now, many entertainers have a lot of
influence over many of their fans and they don't hesitate to use it. Some
performers use their highly visible personas for good and they should be
recognized for doing the right thing for society. Some, are just flat out stupid
and misguided and they should be called out and ultimately ignored or
chastised.
I have written about Angelina Jolie prior to this article
and after reading her latest interviews I feel that I should discuss what she
says and does in this one as well.
Angelina brags that her mother took her to buy "daggers"
at the age of 12 and now she takes her son Maddox to buy real knives and
encourages his love of "war". Knives for a 7 year old? Kids collect all sorts of
things and my own children were fond of various toys as well. NONE of them were
allowed to collect knives or weapons of destruction. I don't understand a woman
who would encourage her very young child to play with knives let alone taking
him to the store to buy them. She claims to be a humanitarian yet she thinks
that teaching a child to play war and collect weapons is a good way to instill
peaceful living in that same child? It alarms me that many young people look up
to this incredibly stupid woman.
Because someone is considered beautiful and has the
ability to act does not excuse the fact that she is setting a horrible example
for others. Angelina admits to being a "cutter" in her past so I wonder if she
would think it normal if her son self-harmed himself.
Fortunately, I believe that most people would dismiss this
person for the idiot that she is and would not follow her example. Sadly, there
are probably some that would follow her lead.
The entertainment community has influenced others
regarding politics and in other areas of life and once again, their lead may be
followed by some people who can't think for themselves or who believe that being
beautiful or talented gives them the knowledge to speak out about important and
life changing subjects. In a time when people are desperately looking for
leadership and hope, vulnerability is a side-effect of desperation and this
concerns me.
A good example of utter lunacy is the show "The View".
This show has a wide audience as does Oprah Winfrey and others of her ilk and
many follow the lead of the people who appear daily to shriek their opinions and
sell their ideas to the masses.
How many gimmicky ideas (that often fail to work) has
Oprah sold to her viewers? How many listen to and believe the words of harpies
like Joy Behar to be absolute fact?
My fear has always been that we as a nation will forgot
that we are individuals with the ability to form our own opinions and that
taking the time to research the facts of any given situation will benefit us far
more than simply following the lead of the above mentioned individuals.
Let's hope that the "change" that the new President has
promised and called for will include the ability for all of us to examine the
facts that are presented to us in our own lives and that we will face the
dilemmas that we encounter with intelligent thought. Let's hope that this
"change" comes from within ourselves and not from the mind of some uninformed or
highly visible performer who knows nothing about how real people live.
