Feb. 2, 2009 Once again, the Hollywood award season is upon us and many
are commenting on the wonderfulness of it all.
Frankly, considering the state of the world and our
economy in particular, I find the fascination with a bunch of over-paid,
over-hyped, freebie-seeking narcissists disgusting.
I refused to watch the Golden Globes or The Critic's
Choice award shows but I couldn't get away from hearing about the fashion dos
and don'ts and the bleeped comments on just about every news channel I turned
too.
Obviously, the words of a moron who happens to know how to
perform and the style choices of some of the world's vainest people were just as
important as the news about the war in Gaza and other equally urgent
matters occurring in the world today. The fact that Angelina Jolie "scowled"
when Ann Hathaway won the award that she herself was nominated for and Tina Fey
telling her internet critics to "Suck it" was really earth shattering and
unimportant information that we all needed to know about. I don't know what I
would have done if I hadn't of been told that Mickey Roark's director
flipped him off during his "thank you" speech.....after all, I have absolutely
nothing else to think about or worry about (insert
heavy sarcasm here).
I realize that watching these folks reward themselves is
amusing for many and that lots of people thrive on watching the Oscars, The
Golden Globes, and the many other self-serving tributes that these
individuals seem to need to sustain themselves; but, I am not one of
them.
I am assuming that Angelina, Brad and their six (or has
the number grown in recent weeks?) kids will manage to survive the
so-called snubs that they received regarding their highly touted movies and that
Renee Zellwegger (sp?) will recover from being called the worst dressed
person at The Golden Awards and that they will all return to their palatial
estates and do just fine despite not having a statue to adorn their
shelves.
I suspect that the opportunity to express their political
points of view is just as important as winning an award and that may be the most
damaging thing that those who didn't have the opportunity to prove to many of us
what we already knew (they are basically uneducated and uninformed) hurt them
more than anything else.
I am looking forward to the end of this never-ending
season of self-love and that the news media will go back to delivering their
usual forecasts of doom and gloom sans the commentary about how the Hollywood
elite reacted during endless hours of wasted televised space.
Some pay to see these so-called stars act and some
don't...but I have absolutely no desire to listen to them when they are not
acting. I discovered long ago that most of them should stick with their
day jobs and stop attempting to persuade us peons that they are the foremost
authorities on who should be running our country or making decisions that effect
our daily lives. When they have walked a mile in my shoes I might consider their
opinions valid.
Until then......they need to just stick to what they do
best...pretending to be someone else. After all, pretending to be one of us is
much easier than actually living like one of us.
