5 Years At UK

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Dec. 20, 2009

December 20th marks my fifth year as a contributor to Useless-Knowledge.

During this time I have written on everything from sports, music, movies, politics, racism, nutrition, history, film noir and book reviews. I hope to reach the 400 articles plateau soon, hopefully by March. I hope to do this while promoting two new novels.

I was drawn to UK because of its contentious nature. Oh, what battles—Liberal V. Conservative; arguments on racism (which brought UK its highest readership level at the time); Faith V. Atheism; and varying schools of though on economics. Over the years, I’ve written some articles that have raised the hackles of my colleagues—in particular a series on Natalee Hollowy, the blonde Alabama teenager who disappeared while touring Aruba .

But that’s me—old, bold and with a tale to unfold. The Old Guard (persons contributing to the site before I was) are still spewing their own opinions as well. Most of the time I disagree with them. I’ve watched them come and go and then return. Some of my more memorable colleagues are Pat Hurley, Fred Smith, Claxton Graham, Ron Lewis, Michelle Malsbury, Jusdy Ramsook, Steve Dayton, Kaycee Nilson, Gary Rogers/Argile Stox…heck, the list is a long one. My favorite writers on the site are Jack Lepaiarz, Brian Barbieta and newcomer Azel Jones.

One thing I’ve learned that we have a looooooong way to go in improving race relations in this country. Contentious debate with folks like Ken Hughes, Ron Lewis/Tom Pain, Carl Tripitz, Thomas Keyes, Molly Mason, John McCrae and Robert Paul Reyes, and Dr. Mick Brooks. I also learned when you face off with people who think “’White is right and the standard by which all others should be judged,’ argument is a waste of time.” (May 2, 2005). On the other hand, these fine writers usually have something enlightening to say on issues as diverse as politics and the world to sports and medicine.

The more things change at UK the more they stay the same. We still have writers lambasting whoever is in the White House; there is still an international flavor to the site and UK is a mix of young, old and those in-between. While we have lost our Google hook-up, a lot of UK writers have built a strong online presence. Many of my articles have been reprinted at other sites.

The articles I’ve written that I enjoyed the most, include an analysis of the 2008 election—roughly ten articles that analyzed the chances of various Democratic and Republican contenders; Black In The Day, my view of how the world has changes since my “salad days”; a two-part series on PNAC (Project for a New American Century), that ran in November of 2005 and talked of how American foreign policy was manipulated by a handful of power-hungry Bush cronies and had been in the works since the early 90’s; and I was proud of the four-part series I wrote on Barack Obama’s ascension to the White House.

Tis The Season, But For What? was another favorite, which discussed America’s obsession with the holidays and how Madison Avenue pimps have hypnotized us into believing iut is our moral obligation to spend money on their holiday hokum and gimmickry. Some of my humorous faves were New State Mottoes Coming In 2010 and Looky Heah, Some More-a Them-Thar Southernisms. The latter was a look at long-held superstitions, while the former was a spoof of U.S. States’ mottoes that I felt needed updating and a bit of truth in advertising.

How long will I continue? I dunno, but God willing I will probably end my run at a nice round number. I thought that number was 300, only to return at the “involuntary insistence” of Ken Hughes, who just couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Meanwhile, I’m going to kick back with a cold bottle of Henry Weinhard and listen to a little George Duke and maybe cap everything off with a little bit of Prince. Until we meet again…

Peace—I’m out..
