Coastline

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Dec. 16, 2009

There was a large pool and beyond the ocean was calm and some sailboat actually glided across it like a secret wind had made an appointment with the white material affixed to the poles. Soon though, there were clouds, and over the next half hour the sky turned dark. Torrents of rain battered the tiki huts, the glass windows, and the lawn chairs. Quiet fear produced itself in the hearts of the watchers, because the storm was becoming more violent by the minute- almost like a hurricane. Some of the dwellers closed their hurricane shutters and moved away from the windows. Others were less cautious and poured a drink or casually listened to the radio. Across the way, the men on the top balcony had gone inside. These were the men that stared for hours each day with binoculars to the sea. These were the men that the woman once said of,’ They are waiting for drugs. That is why they wait and watch. There is a drop of some sort and it is their job to spot it and retrieve it. They have been watching the sea for hours and days and weeks, but I have been watching them...’ Yes, even these men had gone inside. As the afternoon darkened further into night the rain raged and gulping colorless hours engulfed the coastline without mercy and without regret.
