Pulling The Plug On Lake Chappaquiddick

By Stephen Lonewolf Makama
Aug. 28, 2009

It so sad how a single or multiplicity of incidents, careless, unthought-of or plain exuberance can hollow and haunt a man’s life.

The lion of the American Senate passed away quietly this week and with glowing tributes from almost every corner imaginable – US and the wider world.

The man will always be remembered for the self less fight to better the lives of his constituency, his country and the lives of fellow where his influence could reach, but it is unfortunate that no matter how high the glowing tributes somehow that one act of careless indiscretion always seems to push and taint albeit infinitesimally the record of this great man -Lake Chappaquiddick.

What is more tragic is that worse men or men with worse records of indiscretion seem to thrive and flourish even if there is a small amount of hue and cry but the world has become more forgiving? Less judgmental?

Politicians today hardly give a dang so long as their political bases are shored up and election hour is another several years. Remorse and regret for untoward actions are only for times when the chips are really down.

I am sure Ted made peace with himself years ago for that incidence, I am sure Ted went to confession and obtained ‘forgiveness’ for that blight on his soul and career following and I have no doubt the energy he called in for the past 40 plus years were as a result of the fact that he knew he had been given a chance to give back to life what he almost squandered.

America is grateful to Ted not just for carrying on a legacy of selfless family service to a nation but also more importantly for rising above a singular debilitation in mind and body to serve.

He gave all.
