Sailor From USS Making Island Makes Front Page News
By Alexey Braguine
Santiago, Aug. 24, 2009
This morning, a sailor from the American helicopter carrier Making Island, which is visiting Valparaiso will be arraigned in court on charges of child abuse.
The sailor was caught by Chilean police in a hotel room together with a 15-year-old girl and immediately arrested. After arraignment he will be delivered into Chilean Navy custody.
This is a particularly embarrassing incident for the U.S. as several South American countries have shown concern about U.S. activation of the 4th Fleet and the United States-Colombia base agreement, which will be discussed by Unasur members this week in Barriloche.
