Aug. 19, 2009 I have been observing a lot of things on television lately since the weather where I live is so hot I don't get out much. First, I finally realized that watching endless re-runs of my favorite shows like Law And Order (original recipe/CI/SVU), CSI (Las Vegas/Miami/New York) has become problematic. I noticed that I was starting to recite the dialogue along with the characters as they spoke it and knew that it was time to change the channel. Big Brother and a lot of the other "reality-type" shows are just plain stupid and repetitious (not to mention semi-scripted and overly produced) so as to render them un-real. That made me decide to switch to a show that I had never watched before..."Bones". It's an interesting albeit gory show with interesting characters. There are a few problems with the premise but nothing that I can't overcome out of my desperation for something different to watch. The sci-fi aspect is a little more far out than on CSI where a horrible crime is solved in an hour with equipment not yet invented and CSI's who are smarter than Einstein. The main character Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) seems as if she has been living on another planet when it comes to understanding all references to modern culture and Agent Booth her FBI partner, (David Boreanaz)) is a little squishy faced for my liking, but they have great chemistry. I love the subject of forensics and anthropology is fascinating to me so the combination works. My only fear is that I will run out of shows that I've never seen and be back to square one. I must admit that it did bother me a little when "Bones", didn't understand the reference to "Mr. Ed" on one of the episodes and she went to her computer to look up old horse jokes (i.e., "Where do horses stay when they check into a hotel? The bridal suite") Pretty lame. I love "The Closer" and find it to be one of the best written and acted shows on television. I also love the fact that I recognize many of the locations since they are familiar places in my home town of Los Angeles. Sadly, the show comes on in spurts and goes on hiatus twice a year with not much to fill the gap it leaves in it's wake. I was thrilled to hear that "Saving Grace" was canceled since the entire premise of the show was ridiculous and that's saying a lot considering how bad the other choices are. The news is as nutty as usual and since the big story today is the confirmed date of Michael Jackson's burial (August 29th, on what would have been his 51st birthday), there isn't much of interest in that venue either. Can you imagine how awful it will be for the Jackson children to have to go through yet another funeral over two months after their father died? Of course, I doubt that those kids have ever known anything close to what most of us consider normal nor will they ever do so living with that insane family. Speaking of the Jackson family.....Jermaine is still running around trying to collect on his brother's fame and fortune as are the rest of the vultures. Katherine is suing AEG (the production company who was arranging Michael's aborted come-back tour). She fails to realize that contracts are usually binding if the parties to them all sign on the doted line and that her son agreed to the terms set forth in his contract with AEG. That little legal fact probably doesn't bother Katherine if she thinks that she can make money. Is there anyone in that group who simply cared about Michael because he was their child/brother or was he just a cash cow? La Toya tried to become part of the new cast of "Dancing With The Stars" but wiser heads prevailed and she was not invited to participate. I'm surprised that the family didn't sweeten the pot by offering to have Michael's golden coffin as a back-drop as La Toya danced her way into the hearts of the American public. The crime rate isn't abating these days either. It seems as if a woman or small child goes missing every week and no one seems to be able to stop these disappearances from taking place. It's almost like alien abduction......It must be horrible for the families of the missing to sit around waiting for some hiker to stumble across their loved one in a ditch, a canal, a field...wherever. We can always follow the ever contentious health-care fiasco that seems to grow more complicated by the day, or wait for the next person to cry foul because of some real or imagined racial slur. I think that since Obama got elected the language of political correctness has taken over where truth used to be the accepted from of communication in this country. Now we have to watch everything that we say for fear of being perceived as racist. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of genuine racists without having to create imagined ones because they didn't follow some weird language protocol. Oh well, there's always the congress to bitch about. They are always good for a laugh or a good cry as they continue to live in some imaginary world where health-care and bill paying aren't an issue and where giving away other people's money is sport.
Life is a pot-pourri my friend.....life is a pot-pourri!!
