![]() By Bonijean Isaacs Aug. 13, 2009 Thursday, July 12, 2009 The President avoids talking about racial issues because it's a politically incorrect topic for Politicians. He certainly never expected it to be issue when he was just another lawyer in Reverend Jeremiah Wriight's congregation. Granted the young lawyer listened to the man of the cloth rant the Black Counterpart of attitudes often expressed by my White Uncles. My peers and I came to age in the Civil Rights Era and consider with amusement these attitudes which were not uncommon but would eventually go the way of the Dinosaurs. There are less of them but the Dino still roam in modern times. Obama became a politician and decide to run for President. The Reverend anachronistic attitudes came to haunt him but didn't stop him from becoming President. There are folks who think "Yea Haw! A Black President, it long over due. Another group of folks think, Uh Oh! What if he gets revenge for what has been done to the Black People. Slavery, Jim Crow Laws, Ad Infinitum. The President doesn't want to get on a Racial Soapbox but friends and circumstances will force him to climb on it. That is life on life's terms. In the beginning it was the Man of the Cloth now it's the Harvard Professor. His good buddy Black Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. is taken to task by a White Police Officer breaking into his own home. The Professor had just returned to his Harvard home after a trip to China, He was having trouble with front door of his house so and the black taxi driver had to jam the door open in order to get in. . A concerned neighbor saw the called the police. Cambridge Police Officer Sargent James Crowley responded The Professor yelled at the officer calling him a racist and advised him that he "no idea who he was messing with." The good professor was handcuffed, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. The Charges were eventually dropped Racial profiling is declared and lawsuits threatened. The President intervenes quoting tha "The Police acted Stupidly!. Now, Obama apologized and made amends by inviting Gates and Crowley to share a beer with him and the Vice President. What a Unique Experience. I wonder if Obama would invite me to the White House to share a beer with the Nevada Cop who stopped me for Drunk Driving I was driving to a casino to meet a gentleman for coffee. . I had a West Virginia Driver's License. I was driving a friend's Clunker with a Texas Plate and cracked windshield. There were no street lights. I was new in the Community and not used to the roads or the car. Madam, You turned a bit wide on that road. I couldn't find my license and I didn't have a clue where the registration and proof of insurance was. How much have you had to drink Madam? I finally found my license but couldn't locate the proof of insurance which is all that Texas requires. "Officer, I don't drink at all. I handed him my license. Madam, Step out of the car, Count to One Hundred Backwards, Say the ABC's without singing, Walk a Straight Line, Close Your Eyes and touch your nose............... I was mostly amused because I knew that he could test me until Kingdom's Come and never find alcohol on me. Okay Madam, I am going to let you go, but here's a ticket for no insurance. Just send proof of insurance to the courthouse and it goes away. He hands me the ticket. Thank You, Officer. This is going to make a great story in the next 12 Step Meeting that I go to. The 12 Step Group that I belonged to frequently met for coffee in cafe the Casino that I was driving to that night. So how dare that Nevada Cop assume that I am a drunk driver when I've a teetotaler for almost 30 years. If I had challenged the cop that same way that Gates did Crowley, I certainly don't have the experience that many black males do regarding encounters with the police. I've been stopped in traffic and the usual goal is to goal is to get home unscathed and without getting arrested. My inclination is to treat the police officer with respect and hope that respect is returned. The cops that I encounter give out tickets and take take drunks to jail. They often deal with an unsavory type personalities. I am a teetotaler and don't drink so I won't be going to jail for being a drunk driver but I respond to the officer with disrespect it is possible that he will perceive me as a criminal type and I will end up in jail I would have been in Gate's shoes without a President to back me. I suspect that Dubya Bush would not have been as supportive especially if he knew that I voted for Hillary.
I would never share a beer with the President for very practical reasons however I would love to experience High Tea with Michelle Obama.
