Aug. 9, 2009 President Barack Obama receives 30 death threats a day, but most never become public knowledge due to the fear of copycatting. This allegation is brought forth in the New York Times bestseller In The President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents In the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect, by Ronald Kessler. This should come as know surprise with the amount of right-wing vitriol that calls Obama everything from a Nazi to another word that begins with the letter N. Also, consider the amount of venomous press aimed at Ms. Obama, Secret Service agents definitely have their hands full. * * * * California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, acting as a lame duck head of state, contiunues to bvurn bridges and torch his legacy. His line item veto power (currently being challenged in the California Supreme Court), has resulted in $188 million cut from the state coffers geared at shelters that house battered women. Most shelters have seen their funding cut by no less than 25%, but for most the amount is 50% and will result in closure of many of the state’s --- such facilities. Arnold has also cut funding for K-12 education, in-home care services, special education, mental health care and California ’s share of Social Security payments. He also slashed by 85% a program that requires drug treatment sentences for certain lawbreakers. Since “bridging” the budget deficit with smoke and mirrors rather than raising taxes, “The Governator” has seen his approval rating drop to 28%. Next year, the state faces a budget deficit that will be greater than this year’s $26 billion short fall. This is what happens when you have a recall based on political chicanery. Now Californians long for the days of Gray Davis, and just think—a few years ago, some people talked of amending the constitution so that this guy could run for President. . * * * * In Antioch , Californi, not only are black residents who are on Section 8 harassed by the city’s police department, but so are landlords who rent to such tenants. One family of landlords filed suit in federal court alleging the APD’s Community Action Team (CAT) has used intimidation and harassment to pressure them to evict black tenants. This is the third such lawsuit filed against the CAT. (See the Contra Costa Times forum and look under “ Antioch ” and “Section 8” to read the racist tripe Antioch residents post). Earlier this year, CAT members were disciplined for making improper contact with members of the Contra Costa Housing Authority, and several cases that wound up in Superior Court were overturned and the county instructed to reinstate the tenants and make them whole. * * * * For the second time, a Columbia , South Carolina man was caught sexually assaulting a horse. Rodell Vereen pleaded guilty a year earlier to charges of buggery—animal sodomy. He told the judge, “I was just horsing around.” The Judge replied, “I heard of getting some tail, but this is ridiculous.” Okay, they didn’t actually say that, but I couldn’t resist the pun.
