September 23, 2008 If the American economy had “come on”
as President Bush predicted it would back in May, conservative Republicans
would be singing his praises.
Ronald Reagan poster sales would be skyrocketing, and amateur free
market capitalists from every rat hole on Wall Street would be proclaiming victory
over a fictitious and ill-defined foe they call socialism. Instead, the economy has faltered to the point where a 700 Billion
dollar “bailout package” is being seriously contemplated by
Congress. Talk about welfare states. Towering financial giants
like Lehman Brothers, AIG, and Merrill Lynch have fallen or stumbled badly, as
well as lending behemoth Freddie Mac and many others soon to follow. All indicators point to a lengthy period of
recession and fiscal woe, if not an outright depression. Predictably,
instead of admitting their models are flawed, or at the very least displaying
some humility in terms of their understanding of an extremely complex economic
beast, evangelical Republicans are
pointing their silly fingers at everything from Clinton to Cuomo. Their responses are laughable, because they can’t possibly have it
both ways. Free market principles
have been demonstrated to be severely flawed. Market forces do not work, and never
really have. They are false
prophets, and their selfish system is easily gamed. Republicans have never
been known for their intellects, and the utter nonsense that continues to
dribble from their lips can be forgiven as one forgives retarded children for
farting in public. The reality is, the Bush administration has
been – from the middle class perspective – a failure of unprecedented
degree. A shameful and expensive
war in Iraq, a teetering economy, rampant unemployment, homes being lost in
record numbers, the Katrina debacle, spiking gas prices, monstrous deficits, a plunging dollar, the
lowest ratings in history… irreparable damage to the
American dream directly attributable to an eight year Republican orgy in
Congress, orchestrated and led by the diminutive, religious, and completely
average scion of a Texas oil baron.
George Bush Jr. has single-handedly destroyed American trust in the
Executive Branch of government, and now sits idly by as hard working citizens on
both sides of the political spectrum become cynical and restless. Something sinister is afoot, however.
The middle class lens provides a distorted view of the early 21st
century, because energy corporations and weapons contractors have wallowed in fat profits never before seen
on the planet. Only tragically deluded
partisans could fail to see the stark truth of current events; events foreseen fifty years ago by genuine hero and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The nation of Fortunately, new
grass grows in the bomb craters and soil disturbed by tank treads. ------------ About the author: Randall Roberson is a new contributor of Useless-Knowledge.
