Sept. 23, 2008 Upon reading a piece by Ross Terrill titled 'Dealing With China in the Coming Years' (Sept, 2007 http://rationalargumentator.com/issue121/dealingwithchina.html). I've got to say that Senator McCarthy would have been proud. Though written in 2007, this is exactly the style of red-scare hype intermixed with poor understanding of communism as a system that was pervasive in Drunken Joe's heyday. Communism is not the antithesis to freedom, as Terrill alludes to in paragraph four, but rather the antithesis to Capitalism. A capitalist dictatorship is just as easily possible as a communist dictatorship. As for Lenin, he was one of the first to publicly decry the colonization of other nations (particularly in the third world) by larger, industrialized nations. That's why the leaders of nationalist movements (think Ho Chi Minh of Viet Nam) turned to Lenin as inspiration- he saw they had a right to soverignty when nobody else did. Then there was that nonsense about how Reagan "didn't think we were unworthy." Whenever people praise Reagan they neglect to mention of the fact that Reagan secretly funded Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge who massacred millions. This was after as a nation we deposed Prince Sihanouk for not wanting to get involved in the war with Viet Nam, under the Nixon administration. While I'm sure there are some facts in the article, it was swathed in such pro-American nationalism and clear pro-capitalist, freemarketeering thought, it is hard to distinguish fact from conjecture. ------------ About the author: Lindsey Monyelle is a 23 year old freelance writer from Milwaukee, WI.
