Sept. 23, 2008 This is not a campaign pitch for any particular
candidate since I don't really have a preference at this point in time. This is
a commentary on what has helped to make our country a mean-spirited, back-biting
cess pool of hatred.
What has happened to Sarah Palin is a perfect
example of why the USA has lost it's moral compass. Palin is a woman that came
out of the State of Alaska without most people knowing much about who she
is or what she has accomplished.
We heard her give a prepared speech at the RNC and
many saw her interviews with Charlie Gibson of ABC and Sean Hannity of the Fox
News Channel. We have heard quite a lot about Governor Palin during the past
three weeks and although I do not agree with many of the positions she takes on
certain issues, I have heard nothing that would make me hate her to the point of
excoriating her personality, her looks and her very essence as a human being.
Nothing that I have heard would make me hack into
her personal email and totally invade her privacy. I have not heard anything
that would make me call her "white trash" or compare her to a "porn star" as a
disgusting Canadian reporter did. This reporter works for the CBC and from what
little I know of Canada the CBC is funded by the good citizens of Canada. I also
do not EVER recall an American making statements as vicious as this woman
reporter did about any Canadian politician. Truth be known, I doubt that most
Americans care about any Canadian politicians.
I am not surprised that some members of the
Democratic party are taking pot shots at Governor Palin or that some members of
the Republican party are doing the same toward Barrack Obama and Joe Biden. This
seems to be the way that political campaigns are run now.
I personally find the attacks coming from both
sides to be disgusting and completely off message considering that our economy
appears to be imploding and we the people are paying the price. Our Congress
sits on it's collective ass and does nothing and
our Presidents...well...I'm not really sure what our Presidents do.
I find that the attacks against Governor Palin are
especially heinous and over the line and it seems that all they have
accomplished is to make her a huge media star who has united what was once a
fractured party base.
When did it become normal to turn rumor into fact
without checking to see if even a portion of a story is correct? When did
the media stop fact-checking altogether? . As a matter of fact, when did the
media become shills for a particular political party? When did they forget the
meaning of the word bias and when did they actually stop reporting the news
and begin to make it via their own skewed opinions?
"Gonzo Journalism" is alive and well and clear for
all to see. I can no longer count on getting real facts about anything that is
reported. I have no idea what is true and what is slanted to appear true.
Did hurricanes really hit the gulf coast or did
Geraldo Rivera stage them? Are the candidates real people or simply computer
generated to look and sound like real human beings?
Of course, I am exaggerating; but by how
much? If you listen to the various news channels you would think that there are
alternate universes at play and you would have to guess at which one was
real.
I have no idea why this has happened here and I
have no idea if it will ever end. I do know that things have changed from when I
first became aware of the art of the politic. I always knew that things could
and would become shady and that people would lie and attempt to destroy their
opponent. What I didn't contemplate was that the people running for public
office and those reporting their actions and words would meld into the same
rotting pot of destructive vitriol.
We will never heal what ails us until we demand
that the people who lead us behave with common decency.
