Sept. 19, 2008 Every time we head into a Presidential election,
without fail, there comes a time when the candidates and their spokespeople turn
into robots.
They seem to pass around some kind of prepared
speech that is referred to as "talking Points" and everyone associated with
their campaign repeats and repeats the same words.
It's bad enough that the candidates repeat these
same words over and over again but it gets even more annoying when no matter
which news show you tune into you are guaranteed to hear those words parroted by
various talking heads.
It doesn't matter who the candidate is or which
party they belong too, the drill is the same.
Wouldn't it be unique if someone had the guts and
tenacity to speak their own words? You can pass on the message without sounding
like a canned recording and you can get the attention of the public faster if
you actually sound like a living, breathing, THINKING person rather than a
clone.
I can understand it when someone like Tina Fey does
an impersonation of a candidate because that's her job and it's for comedic
value but I can't understand when the candidates are also a parody of
themselves..
No matter the venue or the circumstances, we can
count on hearing the same message until November 4th and by that time a lot of
us are numbed to whatever it is they are trying to convey. Actually, I believe
that a lot of us begin to tune out the words since we know that they are
canned.
Just like I have developed the ability to tune out
canned laughter when watching a television show, I can also tune out the words
that come at me a million times a day. They lose their meaning after awhile and
that means that the candidate loses his or her meaning and I no longer
listen.
For once I'd like to hear a Town Hall Meeting that
has a candidate actually answering questions spontaneously. If I am talking to
someone I know I don't read from a prepared speech and I'd like for the
candidates who are running for office to do the same. If they did, we might
actually be allowed to see how they function under pressure and how they think
without a teleprompter or their ever-boring, repetitious "Talking
Points"
Even the debates are not as spontaneous as I'd like
them to be. We only get lucky and hear some kind of off the cuff truth when one
of them is caught off-guard and with the recent debate formats that isn't likely
to happen.
I don't expect to hear anything terribly original
from either Obama, Biden, McCain or Palin and I believe that's the case because
their handlers are afraid to let them be themselves for fear that they may slip
and allow us to see who they really are.
Wouldn't it be great if we could see who they
really are BEFORE we voted?
