Lost Somewhere In The Center Of The Political Universe

By Meri Ulrich
Sept. 10, 2008

I submitted an article as of late regarding Barrack Obama and his convention and I really wanted to be "Fair and Balanced" about the other side. I wonder if I'm really allowed to use that phrase..."Fair and Balanced"? I'd hate to be sued by Fox News....

Moving right along (and waiting to hear from Fox's lawyers...), I also watched the entire Republican convention and was equally as disappointed with what I observed.

John McCain seems like a genuinely nice man...a man who is truly a hero. He did serve our country and he served it well. I am not sure that he understands the rest of the issues confronting our country but I'm sure that he means well.

As for Sarah Palin, I didn't like her and I didn't like her speech either. She reminded me of a couple of female bosses that I have suffered under in my past and that made me shudder. She made me feel the same way Hillary Clinton does only in a different way. Both of these women have had to fight their way to where they are in the political arena and although I admire their tenacity I don't especially like the image that they present.

I am not your typical housewife and I have worked in cut-throat areas of the work force. I have also dealt with both men and women who were highly ambitious and over-achievers. I didn't like working with or for any of these types because they will do anything and step on anyone to get where they want to be.

As far as the RNC was concerned I felt that it was a mish-mash of speakers and activities (some due in part to the hurricane activity when the convention first began), and ending with John McCain as simply a footnote and Sarah the ultimate star of the show.

What did they say? Not much that I agree with. I enjoyed the moving bio of McCain and even though I know the story by heart, it still moves me. I don't know anyone else who suffered so much for country.  I have many friends who returned from Viet Nam really messed up but none of them were tortured. They fought bravely for a lost cause and were treated horribly when they came home but they weren't battered and broken like John McCain.

Sarah Palin appeared arrogant and sarcastic to me. It surprised me that I would hold that against her since I am also a sarcastic person in my approach to life and have been accused of being arrogant. I just didn't like her.

Just like I believe that Obama is an empty vessel who has been filled with scripted rhetoric representing an extreme position that I do not agree with in most cases; I feel the same about Palin.

I am a centrist and have been for a very long time. I try to vote for like-minded individuals but they are getting harder and harder to find. Even those who proclaim themselves to be in the center eventually move too close to one side or the other.

Bill Clinton got my vote twice because he was a centrist. Sadly, although he still strikes me as the most intelligent candidate to have held the office of President for many years he was also one of the most flawed.

Joe Lieberman is kind of a centrist but he sits on a precarious fence that he may tumble from at any moment. He will never be President in my opinion, because of his religious affiliation and because no party will ever really claim him as a favorite son.

So, who is left? No one running for President at the moment and there-in lies my quandary.

Seeing Obama rise from obscurity on the back of Oprah Winfrey and the scandalous behavior of his past opponents in State and Federal elections, Palin marching out of the wilderness of Alaska (Moose head in hand), McCain being shown in his terrible state after many years of torture (40 years ago), or Joe Biden riding the rather expensive Amtrak train every single day that the Senate is in session, just doesn't move me to wave my flag or go out and stump for any of them.

I doubt very much that any of the above has any Biblical significance but it sure is telling as to where we really stand as far as potential leaders go. It is also right in keeping with the times.

Between a rock and a hard place........ way too left AND right of center where I currently stand.
