Some Political Food For Thought (Chew Carefully)

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Sept. 7, 2008

Like white people bemoaning incessant cries of racism, the media has now taken on equal looks of disbelief, as the GOP and Democrats shout, “Sexism!” over media treatment of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. Clinton ’s arrogance and incompetence derailed the bandwagon locked in cruise-control mode to what was expected to be her coronation. After underestimating Barack Obama, whom many thought to be her weakest foe for the Democratic nomination, she began to cry the crocodile tears of sexism victim.

If Palin’s every move was under the scrutiny of network film crews, her tenure as the GOP vice-presidential choice would be nothing more than a reality show. It has the insinuation of dirty dealing (her alleged abuse of power in the firing of her former brother-in-law), drama (the teenage pregnancy of her teenage daughter), and a little something for the ladies (McClain’s pandering to upset Hillary supporters). This “show” makes I Love New York look like Hill Street Blues.

The GOP decries out of wedlock and teenage pregnancies, yet they somehow turned Bristol Palin’s mis-steps into a Kodak moment. They wax poetic of how the vice-presidential nominee and her husband “Look forward to being grandparents” -- anything to turn the camera’s white-hot glare away from their blatant hypocrisy.

Barack Obama may be vague on the issues, but at least he’s talking about them. He has also shifted his positions so that he appears more as a centrist rather than “the most liberal member of the Senate.” Clever soundbites aside, the Democratic nominee has yet to answer the question of how he plans to pay for his universal healthcare plan.

John McCain hasn’t been much better. His GOP strategists have spent the summer attacking Obama and playing him up as “elitist,” “a celebrity” and “inexperienced.” All the while, McCain has failed to provide details on how he would fix the economy, end the war in Iraq and has flip-flopped on the issue of offshore drilling.

We bitch about the dismal state President Bush has put the country in, but think back to 2004 and the question posed to us: Who would you rather have a beer with, George Bush or John Kerry? We got what we deserved, as America opted for the one with the history of drinking problems.

Jess Jackson has nuked his legacy. For years he condemned young black men for fathering children out of wedlock, before it was revealed that he was the father of a former aide named Karin Stanford. Worse, he tried to keep his affair on the downlow. Time is passing Jesse by, and his referring to Obama using the ‘N’ word and talk of castrating the Democratic nominee only gave more push to his bullet train to hell. It was particular disheartening to hear Jesse utter such vulgarities when one remembers that in the not-so-distant past, racist mob members uttered similar words before they actually carried out such deeds.

I wonder if Condoleezza Rice was seriously considered for the GOP vice-presidential nod. Second, if McCain had actually picked Joe Lieberman, that would have been a mix of strange bedfellows: While McCain is seen as trustworthy, Lieberman is nothing more than a chameleon—a dull one who can only turn various shades of gray.

I’m more amused than excited by Obama’s VP choice Joe “Look ma, watch me putt my foot in my mouth” Biden, when he could have gotten the same thing with Sam Nunn. The former Georgia Senator also has the benefit of being distanced from Washington , and choosing him would not only have provided the foreign policy expertise the ticket needed, but it probably would have increased the Dems chances of winning Georgia . I thought he might be bold and reach across the aisle and select Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel, stealing away McCain’s “Maverick” thunder.

More intriguing will be the winner’s choices for their cabinet.

More questions: Will young Latinos turn the tide for Obama in states where their numbers matter? Will Hillary and Bill make serious efforts to get him elected? Will the Christian right rally behind McCain or sit this one out? What will Hillary supporters do once the curtain to the voting booth is drawn shut?
