Sept. 2, 2008 I am not an Obama supporter. I wanted to lead with that statement right up front. I will not vote for Obama next November. I am not really pleased with the choices this time around but that has become the norm for me. That is a sad fact that I have learned to live with since my supremely idealistic views during the candidacy of John F. Kennedy. Things have changed for me and for my family and in my life. I am no longer idealistic, especially when it comes to anything political. I have discovered that no matter who is elected, they do the same things and nothing much changes or gets solved...at least not the issues that I find pressing and important. But, I digress from the point I want to make. I want to sing the praises of another Kennedy. I would not have voted for Ted Kennedy if he had been his party's nominee for President and I wouldn't vote for him if I lived in his State. I really don't see eye to eye with him on many issues. What I do honor and approve of regarding Senator Kennedy is his hard work as a Senator and his never-ending desire to serve his Country. I can now add respect to the mix. For a man who is suffering from a life threatening medical condition and who is currently receiving chemotherapy it was nearly impossible to believe just how precarious his condition is and how much he is going through. The courage he displayed at the Democratic Convention this evening was astounding. I have not only witnessed first hand what Senator Kennedy is going through but I have lived with it in my own family. The measure of a man is his ability to push forward with his convictions through adversity and with great courage. Nothing exemplified that kind of courage more than watching a very sick man stand before the world to speak to a cause that he truly believes in and to put all of his own personal suffering aside to do so. I have watched the Kennedy's fall one by one....tragedy after tragedy. I cried for John, Robert and John Jr. I supported both John and Robert and worked for and met Robert back in those idealistic days of old. Tonight I expected to cry for Ted when he made what was expected to be a frail and brief appearance on the podium. There were NO tears. What I saw and heard tonight did not call for tears, but for praise and respect. Even though we don't see eye to eye...I hope that he makes good on his "pledge" to return to the Senate in January to fight for what he believes in. No matter what party we belong too or who we vote for, he deserves his place on the Senate floor and we will all be better off when he returns to his long held place in history. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling.
