In Case You Have Forgotten Our Enemies! PART II

By Michael John McCrae
Oct. 30, 2008

In this second part we look at the continuing ineptitude of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The article was entitled: “UN agency: Unsure if Iran hiding nuclear program”, by George Jahn, Associated Press Writer, Mon Sep 22. which begins: “The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned Monday that he cannot determine whether Iran is hiding some nuclear activities…IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei said Iran's stonewalling of his agency was a "serious concern. Iran needs to give the agency substantive information" to clear up suspicions, he said at the start of a 35-nation board IAEA meeting…”

Now Americans should be concerned about this. This is the same IAEA and the same head of the IAEA that lost track of all the weapons of mass destruction of the Saddam Hussein regime. Those losses resulted in a 17th UN resolution that, when ignored by the leader of Iraq , led to a war.

As reported in Part I, Iran is acting as if it might be channeling the ghost of Saddam. Iran is ignoring UN resolutions and “stonewalling” IAEA inspectors. They play Hussein’s anti-diplomacy playbook to the highest degree. The Iranians are stalling and are using the same sorts of excuses for non-compliance once the bread-and-butter of Iraqi pre-war diplomats.

From the Article: “ElBaradei rejected the Iranian suggestion that the IAEA probe could expose non-nuclear military secrets, saying the IAEA "does not in any way seek to 'pry' into Iran's conventional or missile-related military activities..."We need, however, to make use of all relevant information to be able to confirm that no nuclear material is being used for nuclear weapons purposes...If Tehran fails to do so, the IAEA "will not be able to provide credible assurances about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran," he said.”

And of course the Iranians pulled out the old “American puppet” excuse to ignore the requests of the UN and the IAEA. The Iranians called the IAEA America’s “tool”, swore on the name of their prophet Ahmadinejad that Tehran “has demonstrated full cooperation with the agency” and any “allegations of nuclear weapons work by Tehran is based on forged documents”. In other words the response consisted of typical Iranian lies.

From the article: “…an indignant Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, the chief Iranian delegate to the IAEA, rejected suggestions his country was hiding something…”"The international community and all member states of the IAEA are frustrated with this kind of United States actions in the IAEA," he told reporters…"Iran is of course very advanced in missile activities and technology," he said. "But there is no activity at all related to nuclear weapons."

And of course pigs can fly and President Ahmadinejad is only joking when he insists Israel will be “wiped off the face of the earth”.

Yet the IAEA report to this special board meeting stated: “that Tehran has increased the number of centrifuges used to process uranium to nearly 4,000 from 3,000 just a few months ago; and input from a “former U.N. nuclear inspector David Albright says Tehran could reach weapons capacity in as little as 6 months through uranium enrichment as he reported Iran’s centrifuges “appear to be running at approximately 85 percent of their stated target capacity, a significant increase over previous rates.”

The IAEA report also states: “Iran has produced nearly 1,000 pounds of low-enriched uranium…” close to what Albright says is the 1,500-pound minimum needed to produce the 45-60 pounds needed for a simple nuclear bomb under optimal conditions [Tehran] "is progressing toward this capability and can be expected to reach it in six months to two years," says Albright.

So in Iran ’s quest to be the only major player in the Middle East they are stalling inspections and producing enriched uranium.

Iran could easily ease everyone’s concerns if they would openly allow the United Nations inspectors to see what they need to see and confirm what they need to confirm. Yet again the world faces a situation where an openly hostile regime is threatening great destruction of America and her ally Israel . The question arises, “Is anyone paying attention?”
