Oct. 29, 2008 At maybe twenty-five, or maybe a bit more, she was interesting in her anonymity. Wearing black khaki-like pants and a light black sweater she looked out across the parking lot, but at nothing in particular. It wasn’t a bad area within the district, yet it was. You didn’t scurry from your car to the buffet restaurant in fear of stray bullets or lurching predators. You also didn’t walk to that entrance among sunshine and nicely manicured garden areas or stylish verandas. You just went. You just went unless you were talking to someone or unless you were going. In that case you just ‘went’ the other way. That’s how the folks there were; the vibe was a low-grade cement and light pollution covering the sky vibe. The problem with her was that she could have been a bit different had she been raised in even a slightly different environment. She looked from far off like she could be pretty, and then you half-expected to be mistaken when you got closer. But then a pleasant surprise. She was pretty, and with an unexplainable type of eyes. Dark, but with an extra mystery or uniqueness around them, as if they were just set ever so slightly in a unique way that only a surgeon or someone like that would understand. But she was toughened. Toughened by exactly what would be impossible to know. Maybe it was a myriad of things. Too much living in slightly disheveled apartment buildings. A mother that was pretty too, but that had to be tough for her own reasons. Or other things. The neighborhoods. A learning disability, something quirky and unseen, like dyslexia. Whatever the case, the toughness was what showed now, and maybe it just came from nowhere and everywhere.
