Silver And Sails

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Oct. 21, 2008

Peppermint mills and ferocious hills where the skies bend and kiss, or else the long trails that someone once tread and the wind must go there in the nights so lonesome and the moon above, milk boxes and kettles boiling where the plaid shirts run tumble down the mountains.

Men sat at a table and talked about wars gone past, and knew about the different infantry troops, and which ones where the toughest, while outside the churches and houses were there, the crickets gone or doing what crickets do in the cold, and the shingles got ready for dew while the ushers sat down in the pew.

Golden rain, and the queens of the afternoons. Old, old streets that are evidence of the past. Photographs in the wind. Ideologies on fire. Horses running and running through barns where a plane goes up and down and up and down and up again over the barns. Silver rings and lots of things, the cats in the courtyard, the tall sickly beings or forgotten plumbs.

Steel and cartwheels where the fields roam on cattle. Candy and socks and popcorn, there are neon lights and crows, stockings and rows and rows. Floating in the sky, an omen or a pie. Tough girls, with no glee. Nails and whales and fishing sails.
