Carnival Sans Moon

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Oct. 16, 2008

The road was a one-lane highway, and it did not have any lights. The only lights were from other cars and trucks. An overcast sky stretched out in all directions. Black birds were agile and sat atop metal road signs that were forest green with white lettering. Highway 9. Route 4. 18th Side road. There was no sun and there was no moon. It was threatening to rain. Large fields were parking lots. Teenagers in orange vests directed cars down laneways. Where you parked, you parked, and made your way. No white demarcation lines. Inside was large, but inside was for the most part outside. There was a livestock area. Sheep, pigs, cows. There were mechanical horses. The real horses were supposed to be in a rink, but they were not there. There was a bike show, with wooden planks and ramps. Scattered everywhere were booths, and they had the same things the head shops contained. Posters, clothing, and other. There was an Indian man selling belts. Hundreds of belts lying on tables. Many Mexican families walked around. They were migrant workers. They looked beautiful and strange. They couldn’t know you, and you couldn’t know them, because of a large gap. The gap was cultural, economic, and geographical. More than that it was somehow spiritual. Even more than that it was somehow plainly and hugely existential. There was cold in the air. And wind. Mountains, streams, or a nearby desert there was not. Just land, land, and land. The rides were varied, but all of them lit up with thousands of small light bulbs. Some had strobe lights. There were swings, bumper cars, slides, and a ship that went back and forth, rocking each way into the sky. Grease, hydraulics, ball bearings, motors, extension cords, and steel, steel, steel. There was a Ferris wheel, traveling upwards and round. In the night, it began to rain. The roads were darker and wet. Still there was no moon.
