What Would You Do?

By Meri Ulrich

Although McCain did better then in the previous debates, he failed to "close the deal". He had several chances to call out Obama on various issues such as the tax and spend plan that Obama is touting. He never asked Obama where he was going to get the money to carry out his plans to lower taxes and he didn't explain how he was going to give tax breaks to 95% of the American people when 40% don't pay taxes at all.

Will he be sending non-tax payers a check when they haven't contributed?

A lot of small businesses (my son's included) make a quarter of a million dollars a year but their overhead is about 70 to 80% of that amount therefore leaving them with barely enough to live on. If he considered the NET profits that these businesses make then they would surely fall below the taxable level.  How can you tax the GROSS amount when most of that goes for inventory and payroll.

My son's actual salary is around $50,000 per year so how is it fair to tax him on the entire amount that his company generates? By doing this Obama will guarantee that people like my son and "Joe the Plumber" cannot run a small business nor hire employees. They certainly won't be able to afford to provide their employees with medical insurance.

There were several areas where McCain missed the boat when confronting Obama on his plans for America and for that reason he (McCain) lost the debate and probably the election as well.

Obama is a very eloquent speaker but he really says nothing about how he will execute his sweeping tax reforms. I for one, do not believe that he will be able to accomplish anything that he speaks about. I for one, do not believe that in this failing economy he will be able to cut taxes and still pay for the many freebee programs that he outlines on the stump and during the debates.  How will he help pay for college tuition, health insurance and build new forms of energy if there is less revenue coming in to the government? Does he believe that the large corporations who are currently going abroad due to lower taxes will stay here if he taxes them even more?

I don't agree with McCain on some issues but I do agree with his proposal to have an across the board spending freeze until each and every program currently in use is closely examined. Those that don't work should be eliminated and those that are broken but serve the greater good should be fixed and reformed.

The first thing that the new President should do is eliminate lobbyists and their influence over the Congress. I believe that in doing so we would see an immediate growth in funds available to the people. No more ridiculous amounts of money going to various states for useless and non-beneficial items. No more bridges to nowhere and over-head projectors to name just a couple of ways that lobbyists influence our elected officials.

I believe that if an elected official votes for any bill that is influenced by a lobbyist or if any elected official accepts contributions in any form from one of the above that he or she should be removed from their position.

Next, I would make sure that there are over-sight committees formed; made up of not only experts in the various fields of interest but of American citizens who have everything to gain and everything to lose from how our tax dollars are spent.

We should be over-seeing the government and how they spend our money and it's obvious that by simply electing someone to hold an office in our state or district is not enough. It is also obvious by now that once these people are elected they apparently forget about the people they represent and do whatever they like with our money.

Another area I would address is the ability of Congress to vote themselves raises without any accountability from the American people. I don't get a $30,000 yearly cost of living raise; do you? I don't determine how much of a raise I will get in my social security...the Congress does. That would be the same Congress that is voting themselves ridiculous amounts of money for doing NOTHING.

On many local ballots the salaries of the elected officials are voted upon by the people so why not do the same for the Congress? If the haven't accomplished anything than why give them any raise at all? Why not have a probationary period like most of us are subjected too when we work for someone? If they fail to deliver what they were elected to do during that period they are subject to immediate dismissal. If all of us were given four years or six years to prove our worth on the job then the bad apples would ruin a lot of businesses. We would not be held accountable until our term expired and we all know what that means.

I see our biggest problems coming from the Congress (both houses) and if we deal with that then we might actually get somewhere in improving conditions for all of us.

It's time for Congress to stop getting a free ride. With a Congress totally controlled by one party and a President of that same party there will be no stopping them from doing whatever they please. There will be no checks and balances and that is not a good thing for any of us.

We have a voice and we really don't use it or speak loudly enough for them to hear or care what we think or what we feel.

It's time for that to change and time for the American people to exercise their rights under the Constitution. This is supposed to be a government by the people and for the people but it isn't. Only a few decide our fate and those few have their own special interests to fulfill. We are getting the short end of the stick and there has to be some way to stop this vicious cycle.

Simply voting is not enough. It's time for a massive non-violent protest in whatever form that must take to change the way things are run.

We did it before and we can do it again.
