Perfidia

By Thomas Keyes
Nov. 6, 2008

Perfidia is a Mexican song about a perfidious lover, though Americans would be more inclined to say unfaithful than perfidious. This, of course, is not the happiest or most elevated subject that a song could have, but Perfidia has remained popular since it appeared in 1939, because of its beautiful melody. The composer was Alberto Domínguez (1913-1975).

I myself sing many songs in many languages, but the ones I learned first were Spanish songs, including Perfidia, which I have known since I was a teen-ager, back in the 1950's. At one time, I had forgotten some of the lyrics, but in those days, one didn't merely get online and google them in a flash. After visiting several libraries over a number of years, I finally found a songbook that had Perfidia and so I relearned the lyrics about 1990.

Here are the Spanish lyrics:

Perfidia

Nadie comprende lo que sufro yo.
Canto pues ya no puedo sollozar.
Solo, temblando de ansiedad estoy.
Todos me miran y se van.

Mujer, si puedes tú con Dios hablar,
Pregúntale si yo alguna vez
Te he dejado de adorar.
Y al mar, espejo de mi corazón,
Las veces que me ha visto llorar
La perfidia de tu amor.

Te he buscado dondequiera que yo voy
Y no te puedo hallar.
¿Para qué quiero otros besos
Si tus labios no me quieren ya besar?

Y tú ¿quién sabe por donde andarás?
¿Quién sabe qué aventura tendrás?
!Qué lejos estas de mí!

Te he buscado dondequiera que yo voy
Y no te puedo hallar.
¿Para qué quiero otros besos
Si tus labios no me quieren ya besar?

Y tú ¿quién sabe por donde andarás?
¿Quién sabe qué aventura tendrás? !Qué lejos estas de mí!

Another website has slightly different lyrics, but I think I have chosen the better version. See:

The melody can be heard at this URL. Just scroll down the list and click on Perfidia:

Here is my own more or less literal translation, in which I have made no attempt to match the number of syllables to the number of notes in the melody. This is just for information.

No one understands what I am suffering.
I sing since I can no longer sob.
Alone, trembling with anxiety, am I.
All look at me and go away.

Woman, if you can speak with God,
Ask him if ever I have
Stopped loving you.
And (ask) the sea, the mirror of my heart,
How many times it has seen me weep
The perfidy of your love.

I have searched for you wherever I go
And I cannot find you.
Why would I want other kisses,
If your lips no longer want to kiss me?

Who knows where you will go?
Who knows what adventure you will have?
How far from me you are!

I have searched for you wherever I go
And I cannot find you.
Why would I want other kisses,
If your lips no longer want to kiss me?

Who knows where you will go?
Who knows what adventure you will have?
How far from me you are!

An English-language version appeared long ago, but the hybrid lyrics have little or nothing to do with the original:

Nadie comprende lo que sufro yo
Tanto que ya no puedo sollozar
Solo temblando de ansiedad estoy
Todos me miran y se van

To you, my heart cries out "Perfidia"
For I find you, the love of my life
In somebody else's arms

Your eyes are echoing "Perfidia"
Forgetful of the promise of love
You're sharing another's charms

With a sad lament my dreams are faded like a broken melody
While the gods of love look down and laugh
At what romantic fools we mortals be

And now, I know my love was not for you
And so I take it back with a sigh
Perfidious one, Goodbye

With a sad lament my dreams are faded like a broken melody
While the gods of love look down and laugh
At what romantic fools we mortals be

And now, I know* my love was not for you
And so I take it back with a sigh
Perfidious one, Goodbye
Goodbye

There are a couple of little doubts in my mind that could have been settled if the Spanish lyrics that I found had been punctuated better. I have tried to add correct punctuation.
