Don't Panic

By Michael F Russell
Nov. 5, 2008

In the immortal words of Douglas Adams, don’t panic. Although we are now talking about an election and not some guide to the galaxy, those words still apply. Please don’t panic. At least not yet.

Oh, ok, I guess a little panic is in order. I mean, It is a moment in history that a man who happens to be Afro-American is now the leader of the free world. We have come a long way since Jim Crow, hell, just thirty years ago this would have been impossible. I just wish he would have been a republican. Or at the very least a moderate. I think that the desire to break away from any racist tendencies blinded us to what he true stands for, and that scares me a lot more that clowns, loud noises or the dark could ever do.

I have always tried to find the silver lining in any cloud (though I never thought that the same silver lining would be taxed so much) and I am writing tonight, with a heavy heart and a strong scotch, to let everyone know that it will be ok.

First off, the republican party can no longer be falsely blamed for the economic mess that will continue with the implementation of Obamas’ tax plans. We can actually sit on the sidelines and laugh (though bittersweet because we’re going to be taxed too) at the coming depression that will run through our country.

Second, we can shake our head in wonder at the civilian "Peace Force" that Obama wants to implement. That’s right, he’s going to cut military spending and turn that money into a new government agency that will mimic our military but be concerned with ‘peace’.

Third, we can have our battles just to keep us occupied, the left will resume, with increased vigor, to stifle talk radio and the conservative movement with the Fairness Doctrine. Unfortunately, we can’t always associate wining an election with intelligence. They, those on the left, will wrongly assume, that this election will be a referendum on conservatives.Ooooooooh, they couldn’t BE more wrong.

Let’s look at it this way, this election was a clearing of all those in Washington that would continue failed policies on our side. But DO NOT mistake that for a failing of the conservative movement. The republican party messed up. They made huge mistakes. And they paid for them.

The reason Obama was elected was because of the economy. And regardless of what you think about the war, the threat of terror attacks, or the whole dang mortgage mess, it’s the economy that is going to sink or swim Obama.

An old friend of mine, goes by the name of Mark Twain, once said,It isn't the sum you get, it's how much you can buy with it, that's the important thing; and it's that that tells whether your wages are high in fact or only high in name. - A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Good luck and Godspeed to all of us.
