May 3, 2008 For some time now, as I’ve sent action faxes to my Senators and Congressman concerning the attempt-of-the-week to grant immunity and citizenship to illegal immigrants, I’ve tried to educate them as to the meaning of the word “illegal”. After a long time, I realized they do know the meaning of the word but they just don’t care. In fact, if they are to keep those campaign contributions rolling in, it is in their best interests to ignore the word at every turn. So long as there is a flow of money with which to line their pockets, our elected lawmakers will continue to fight - to maintain slavery. History lesson: Are you aware that the United States of America has one of the best records in the world regarding slavery? Never mind those stump speakers (both white and black) who play the black slavery and white guilt cards as if they are a matched pair trumping all else. Either they are lying or they know nothing of history. This country came into being in 1781. Although slavery was not mentioned in the Constitution (ratified in 1788), the founding fathers were concerned and by 1800 (only twelve years after ratification) the further importation of slaves was illegal. Still, they wrestled with the question of the slaves already here (did you know the Civil War almost began during the administration of Andrew Jackson?) but it was not until Lincoln bit the bullet and issued the Emancipation Proclamation that the matter was settled once and for all. America had legalized slavery for slightly more than eighty years – surely one of the shortest of all human slavery periods. What? You say slavery existed on these shores before 1781? Of course it did, but we were not then America. We were a collection of British colonies and the laws were what the British made for us. Once we did become a country, good men rolled up their sleeves and tackled the problem, bringing about an eventual resolution. Remember that next time you hear a speaker playing the slavery card. And just what has all that to do with ignoring illegal immigration? Listen. We’ve all heard the specious “humanitarian” arguments paraded in public with regard to granting blanket amnesty to the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in our country (and you can bet the amnesty will cover all those who cross the border in the future). 1. “These people must be brought out of the shadows.” Indeed? Why? Criminals have always lived in the shadows (also known as “the underworld”) and they are there by choice: so they won’t get caught. 2. “They do the jobs Americans won’t do.” Hell, no, Americans won’t do them! Not at those wages. 3. “They work for lower wages, thus keeping prices down on fruits and vegetables.” The first part is true, but the second part should read, “…thus allowing the agribusiness guys to keep more of their profits.” The same math applies concerning those illegals employed in other jobs. Instead of hiring an American roofer and paying him twenty dollars an hour, any contractor is more than happy to pay an illegal immigrant five dollars an hour to drive the same nails in the same shingles. (Economic Exercise: If you’re thinking of having a contractor do something to your home, compare the bid of one who uses illegals with one who does not. Can you say “windfall profits”?) And our lawmakers – who of course do not believe any of their above talking points - are hell-bent to protect not only the contractor’s right to do so, but to ensure that he has a steady pool of illegals to replace those who may be accidentally deported or who’ve already made their pile and taken it back to Mexico. And that’s where the slavery comes in. Consider four of the biggest supporters of amnesty and their home states: Nancy Pelosi of California, Harry Reid of Nevada, John McCain of Arizona and George Bush of Texas. All from western states where the illegal population is high, the wages to illegals low and the politician’s indebtedness to the big employers in their respective states great enough to cloud their judgment, causing them to think no one will really notice if they grant a blanket amnesty. For as long as there is a steady flow of illegals willing to work for low wages, the friends and donors of the politicians can make large profits, which then find their way to the pols as “campaign contributions”. Think about it. In all the talk about legalizing illegal immigrants, have you heard ANY proponent say these immigrants should be paid wages on par with Americans? Have ANY of them ever said that if an American in Oak Park, Illinois charges twenty dollars for cutting grass, a Mexican with a lawnmower should be paid the same? It’s economic slavery, folks and the westerners have a vested interest in maintaining a cheap labor force for their patrons. And, since employers in the rest of the U.S.A. aren’t stupid, they’re more than happy to jump on the low wages wagon and compromise whatever principles they may once have had. It’s all illegal but it’s also all about the money, so that makes it all right – in the eyes of our lawmakers. Believe me, if the question was not about perpetuating economic slavery, that border fence would have been built years ago. But the Mexicans are smarter than the politicians – Hell, who isn’t? – and they have their own agenda: work for peanuts now, get the amnesty and THEN demand wage parity. What happens then? If you’re an employer and you’re not absolutely stupid, what do you do when you have a choice between two workers – both of whom now demand the same pay scale – but one speaks English and the other speaks broken English or no English? You hire the native American and tell the Mexican “Good luck down the road.” The Mexican, of course, is now largely unemployable – but still an amnestied back-door citizen - and so he goes down the road and applies for welfare and food stamps. With his free time – and he has a lot of it – he demands bilingual schools, shops, stores, restaurants, theatres, newspapers and magazines.
