 By Bonijean Isaacs Mar. 22, 2008 There is much ado about a Speech given in 2006 by the Minister of Obama’s Church. This is a church that describes the members as Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian. The Church’s Mission is to strengthen the Black Community. Black people have survived Slavery and Jim Crow Laws. Why should it be surprising that Black Folks have issues with Dominate White Society? Should we be appalled when a Black Minister of a Church with a predominate Black Congregation does a speech that reflects some of these issues? Is Senator Obama expected to disassociate himself with every Black colleague, acquaintance and friend who displays politically incorrect although not entirely uncommon attitudes. Pat Robertson blames the 911 Attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on the Liberals, Feminist, Gays and ACLU. Bush and his Conservative Cronies quickly condemned his words. It is likely that Dubya and his Allies are not fond of Liberals, Feminist, Gays and ACLU either. They probably listen to Spiritual Mentors who are share the Robertson Mindset. So Barrack Obama was called a racist for describing his White Grandmother as a “Typical White Woman” who would feel fear when encountering a Black Man on the Streets. I remember the days when living the outskirts of Watts in Los Angeles. A stroll to the bus stop also involved dodging Black Gangsters. I was mugged by a Crip and had to go to Harbor General Hospital to get the back of my skull stitched up. The laceration was repaired by a Black Physician. If I had to move back to that neighborhood, I would still be cautious because I am not sure I would know the difference between a Crip and a Doctor. Years later, my sons and I moved to a Neighborhood in Ventura, California called “The Avenue.” This is the poor section which consisted of a varying racial population. We attended “The Avenue Church.” There are many differences between me and the typical Fundamentalist Christians but being active in a Church is better than being active in a Crack House. The Church members included a married couple with a Black husband, a White wife and several children. My son commented that couple must not be reproducing properly because the children should look like Swirl Pops. This is a very fascinating and historical election. I can respect a man who doesn’t cave in and become an Oreo for political gain. I find it interesting that Obama won the Virginia Primaries when Virginia has been traditionally known for racist attitudes. Hillary won the Primaries in Texas which has a sexist reputation. This reflects the progressive changing attitudes of Modern Society.
