Mar. 13, 2008 The U.S. Constitution was designed, especially the first amendment, assuming that the press would be at least marginally honest and impartial in its reportage. That's not been the case in decades, unfortunately, and we are all the poorer for it. Ask any journalism major at any reputable university why he wants to be a journalist and he'll usually tell you, "I want to make a difference." In other words, they are agenda-driven. Unfortunately, their agendas (agendae?) are usually set by their journalism professors who are almost invariably left-of-center politically and see themselves as crusaders instead of teachers. For example, of the 100 or so professors at Southern Methodist University who signed that letter objecting to the Bush Presidential Library being established there, HALF were from the Journalism or Law schools. Their reasoning? They despise President George W. Bush--what many of us have come to know as "Bush Derangement Syndrome." Those suffering from BDS hate the President with a virulence that I have never seen in my lifetime. I suppose it revolves around their perception that he's a boob without a clue yet he beats them at their own game regularly. It probably stems from the debacle in Florida during the 2000 elections. Most of them are convinced that he "stole" the election from the former Vice President. No amount of proof to the contrary will ever convince them that isn't so. Even the press, which conducted its own investigation after the election results were settled, proved that even if the demanded recounts had been done as the Gore campaign wanted, Bush would still have won Florida, and thus the Presidency, but that doesn't seem to matter one whit. Some still insist that the U.S. Supreme Court "gave" the election to Bush--despite the fact that the USSC voted 7-2 that the Gore campaign's request (and the Florida Supreme Court's order) for a recount of only those counties that Gore had won was unconstitutional on its face and a violation of the 14th Amendment's assurance of equal protection under the law. It's just that the liberal justices decided the obvious remedy of remanding the case back to the Florida SC wasn't "necessary." In other words, they recognized the violation of the Constitution, but chose not to do anything about it! The far left has never gotten over it. Despite all their own shenanigans in an effort to give the election to Gore, they were beaten by this yokel from Texas and it still grates on their psyches. They registered (and helped vote) hundreds of illegal aliens from Haiti and Cuban non-citizen refugees in Miami. They callenged military absentee ballots, knowing that they would be predominantly for Bush, for the most specious of reasons--lack of a postmark--apparently willing to ignore the fact that franked mail from war zones is NOT cancelled like regular mail...at least partly for security reasons. Finally, they persuaded a Democrat-dominated Florida Supreme Court to order a selective recount of only those counties where most of the votes were for Gore, which the U.S. Supreme Court nixed. They hate both President Bush and one of his closest advisors, Karl Rove, for showing them up. The press was complicit in all this, of course. Selectively reporting the facts of the case in an effort to convince America that George Bush would have an "illegitimate" Presidency. Unfortunately, the there's now an alternative "press" in the internet and on nationwide syndicated talk radio and Americans weren't really fooled...at least not enough to prevent Bush's reelection in 2004. The press, of course, tried to suppress any information that was negative about the Democrats' nominee, but it just doesn't work any longer (thank the heavens!) All this isn't really terribly new, of course. I first became aware of it in the 60's with the utterly awful reportage about Vietnam. I began to notice the bad reporting mostly because of what was NOT being reported about that conflict. Like most Americans of that era, I was an admirer of Walter Cronkite. We trusted this avuncular man to tell us the truth and his sincerity was beyond question so we thought he was reporting facts and not injecting his leftist bias into his stories. In fact, few of us were even aware that he possessed a decidedly leftist point of view. Of course, the American left had been denying the negatives we knew about the Soviet Union for decades, but I was pretty politically naive and hadn't paid close attention. When Walter Cronkite stated on national TV that the 1968 Tet Offensive was a decided "victory" for the Viet Cong, I took sharp notice. The VC won no battles, took part of Hue for only about 3 days and suffered the loss of almost 60% of their manpower, yet, according to Cronkite, this was a "victory" for these vicious murderers. These were people who killed, out of hand, anyone who voiced opposition to them, including that person's entire families...including children and even babies, yet Cronkite and others like him spoke of them with admiration. Now we are in another Presidential cycle. The press, true to form, have been touting in glowing terms, those THEY want to see running for each major party. They've reported most positively, John McCain's "maverick" status and succeeded in making him the GOP front-runner for nomination. They've reported even MORE positively, the candidacy of Barrack Obama and completely blacked out the fact that he has THE most liberal-left voting record in the U.S. Senate since his election 4 years ago. They wield this sort of power because of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Act, which basically takes power away from the people and places it in the hands of .....guess who?.....the press. The press sees themselves as "king-makers" and believe that THEY can dictate who our President is this next cycle. They've succeeded so far in nearly nominating two liberals so that they win no matter who loses. We've got to take this power away from them and the only way to do that is to see to it that we elect conservative legislators from now on. That way, no matter who is President, they can be checkmated by Congress if they try to overstep their bounds. Get out and vote. It won't really matter much whether we elect a Democrat or a Republican this year. It DOES matter who we elect to represent us in Congress. ------------ About the author: David A.
