Barack Can Save The Democrats From Another Slow, Boring Defeat

By Jack Lepiarz
Mar. 13, 2008

Barack Obama is clearly the front-runner for the Democratic Party. He's one most of the contests and now holds a sizeable lead over Hillary Clinton--both in delegates and in momentum.

This is something that Democrats should be happy about.

Hillary Clinton probably would not be a bad president (at least if you think like a Democrat). She has more experience than Obama, she's got an immediate advisor in husband Bill Clinton, and she's more moderate than Obama.

The problem? She's just like the past two candidates the Democrats have turned out in presidential elections. Al Gore probably would have been a very good president. Kerry might have been good, and certainly would have been better than President Bush's second term. But both of these candidates possessed the emotional appeal of a wet slug. Zero. Both candidates argued their cases logically and tried to appeal to the "brain" of the American voter. Both failed (although 2000 is still a gray area).

Hillary Clinton is very much the same. She accuses Barack Obama of running a campaign of "words," saying she has the experience, the political know-how to run the country. That may very well be correct, but I'd rather see a Democrat get elected, and Hillary is by no means a sure-fire win against John McCain. The media is very fond McCain and despite an extremely conservative voting record (aside from a few issues like waterboarding and immigration), he still gets painted as a moderate. Clinton, on the other hand, just gets painted as someone who shifts with the tides of popular opinion. Republicans also see her as the Anti-Christ (ironic, seeing as she's the most moderate Democrat), so it's unlikely that you'll any moderate Republicans switching to her side.

Barack on the other hand, has run an extraordinarily inspiring campaign. Democrats haven't seen a candidate this charismatic since JFK. Not even Bill Clinton was this good. Critics say Obama isn't offering substance. They say he's simply repeating the same words and phrases over and over again. This is absurd.

Not because it's false. It's true. It's absurd because every candidate does it. It's only when a candidate actually inspires us that critics say they lack substance.

If Democrats want to win the Executive Branch in 2008, they need a candidate who has emotional appeal and someone who can get moderate Republican votes. Barack can. Hillary cannot. If Hillary is the Democrats' nominee, it's very likely that we'll see another four years of a Republican who wants to keep us in Iraq for a hundred years.
