June 12, 2008 Ask a typical, present-day liberal what he stands for and he'll tell you, "We're for the poor, the downtrodden and the working people of this country." What that actually means is open for interpretation, but being "for" someone doesn't always mean that one has that someone's best interests at heart. That's the BIG lie modern liberals tell themselves and others. They are "for" the poor, the downtrodden and the working people of the United States ONLY insofar as those groups can be controlled and used to consolidate the power and authority of the liberal elites. Oh, they'll throw their imagined constituencies a bone now and then--from the government coffers, of course, and only rarely from their own pockets--but they are interested in remolding the country into THEIR idea of utopia. They seek a utopia where everyone agrees that the State is prime and individuals are subservient to it. In other words, communism is their "holy grail." I suspect that most liberals aren't even aware that that's what they are working towards. Modern liberalism favors a system where all means of communication MUST be controlled--the news media, especially the broadcast media, education, entertainment and lately the internet, all must fall under the control of the liberal elites because opposing viewpoints are simply not to be tolerated. I've noticed in recent years that even the word "liberal" angers these people when applied to them. They've taken to calling themselves "progressives" instead. Their idea of "progress" is, of course, the same as the ultimate goal of modern liberals--control, control, control. These are the people who think the Soviet Union failed because "the wrong sort of people" were running things, implying that it would have succeeded if only THEY had the reins of power. Liberals simply don't understand the old adage that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The founding fathers understood that very well and was one of the reasons that, in 1783, they devised a government with VERY limited powers. It worked pretty well until American citizens began to realize that they could vote themselves largesse out of the public treasury...the very thing that Compte Alexis de Toqueville warned against in the middle of the 19th Century. The "progress" of socialism crept along fairly slowly until the Great Depression hit in the late 1920's and early 1930's. The "beneficiary" of this economic downturn was, of course, modern liberalism and especially FDR and his administration. He took advantage of the situation and instituted several programs that exacerbated the situation, in reality, but which, more importantly to liberals, convinced a large number of people that "the government" was where one could go for "help" when times got tough. Maybe the worst of these was the "Social Security" program that was designed to bail out people in retirement that simply hadn't made provisions for themselves. It was always a "Ponzi" scheme, from the very first and, if there was any common sense in the country at that time, would have been declared illegal from the outset. It was a Godsend for liberals, however. Over the next 70 years, they were able to manipulate this system to their advantage to the point where liberals, via the Democrat Party, were able to take control in the early 50's of the nation's pursestrings and keep them for over 40 years!! They KEPT control of those pursestrings because they devised ways to buy support from the indolent, the uninspired and the hopeless as well as from those who shared their sense of "guilt" over being so prosperous while others languished in "poverty"...a "poverty," by the way, which was "poverty" only relatively speaking. The "poor" of the United States enjoy a level of material wealth that would place them in the middle classes of most other countries of the world--even BEFORE the government steps in with their giveaways. People classified as "poor" in the U.S. (according to the U.S. census bureau) are highly likely to OWN at least one car, 90% have a telephone, 90% have at least one color TV, NONE are in danger of starving and are more likely than not to actually be at least slightly overweight! Americans finally got their fill after watching LBJ's "war on poverty" programs pump 5 TRILLION dollars over 30 years into trying to eradicate "poverty" only to find that "poverty" wasn't reduced by a single percentage-point! They turned the reins of government over to Republicans on promises of fiscal sanity and spending restraints and the GOP actually did that very thing for a couple of years. However, those who were left-leaning anyway, noted that Democrats had stayed in power for decades by handing out goodies so they adopted that very habit--which ultimately got them relegated back to their former, back-bench status...that and trying to enact that idiotic illegal alien amnesty program, jacking up the funding for the Department of Education instead of eliminating an agency that does NOTHING to contribute to education and refusing to stand up to the left in Congress despite being in the majority. ------------ About the author: David A.
