June 10, 2008 As many problems as I have with President Bush's policies and actions over the last seven and a half years, his speech before the Knesset earlier in May was spot on. He was absolutely right to point out that conducting "talks" with tyrants in Iran, Syria and North Korea without preconditions is a stupid idea akin to Chamberlain's Munich talks with the Hitler regime, which he declared would bring "peace in our time." From the reactions of many Democrat politicians, you'd think he'd accused them of being...Quislings. He didn't...not that he shouldn't have, mind you. The Democrats seem to have a particular blind spot when it comes to our avowed enemies. They believe that evil can be defeated by talking evil people out of their evil intentions. The opening sequence of the movie "Gladiator" is more nearly accurate, where the negotiator is returned to the Roman lines headless. Yes, I know. It was just a movie, but if you believe that was NOT what often happened, your education in history is sadly lacking. I have little doubt that many Democrats actually love this country and want what's best for it. The problem is that what many Democrats seem to want for this country would almost literally destroy it. Liberal "leadership" in the "Party of the People" has slowly but surely guided us towards third-world status. They've spent us into near bankruptcy with pie-in-the-sky projects that have no basis in the Constitution--unfortunately with the willing compliance of Republicans. They were warned in the late '70's, when both houses of Congress and the Presidency were controlled by Democrats, that we faced a REAL crisis in energy availability if they didn't enact a comprehensive energy policy designed to make us energy independent. Instead, they concentrated their energies on chasing phony crises like an imaginary "hole" in the ozone layer, acidification of lakes in the Northeast, exposure to second-hand smoke or lately on anthropogenic "global warming," ignoring the looming energy crisis. In other words, they seek to control human behavior through tax policy and onorous regulations instead of having faith in the American spirit and the capitalist system that made us the greatest country in the world...and, coincidentally, gave them the positions of power and influence that they enjoy. After his Knesset speech, all sorts of liberal Democrats came out of the woodwork to stand in front of TV cameras and scream, "Foul!" One is tempted to quote Shakespeare by saying, "Methinks he protesteth too much." President Bush did not mention Senator Obama OR his campaign pledge last year to "...meet with the leaders of Iran, Syria or North Korea without preconditions." Bush didn't even mention the idiotic visit with Hamas, a known terrorist group, by former President Carter last month, but they all assumed he was talking about their putative Presidential nominee and taking a swipe at his naivete and inexperience during this election cycle purely for political purposes. I know there are "rumors" that some anonymous, unnamed "aides" of the President supposedly told some news organization that President Bush WAS referring to Obama, but we should have learned by now to be VERY skeptical of such unnamed "sources" touted by our own press. As many times as the media's "sources" have turned out to be phonies, one would think we'd have learned that lesson by now. The Israelis don't need to be told how fruitless talks with such people can be. The PLO, Hezbollah and Hamas have been "talking" with the Israelis for decades, but Israeli citizens still must duck incoming rockets on a daily basis--even after Israel has given them nearly all of what they demand short of the destruction of Israel. No amount of squealing on the part of Democrats can change the fact that President Bush was absolutely correct that conducting such talks are the equivalent of appeasement. Let's not forget that Ahmajinedad's stature in the Arab world rose exponentially when he was asked to deliver those Ivy League speeches last year. Just think how it would go up if the U.S. President came to him, hat in hand, and begged for "talks." ------------ About the author: David A.
