June 10, 2008 Are there signs that the great revolution began in the sixties is winding down? Once upon a time to be a member of the counter culture was considered cool. Those reclining on a bean filled sack quoting Camus, Marx, Mead, Kinsey and other such frauds were considered the heralds of the new, brighter age. Fast forward to the present and we observe that the descendants of the Age of Aquarius are in bad straights. Their music has lost all melody and construction, reduced to the childish bashing of drums and the shouting of threatening lyrics. Once almost immune from censure the counter culture now find themselves facing legal action resulting from the expression of their cultural values. Almost everyday now the free news sheets are alive with the peccadillo's of the rich and famous media stars as they infringe upon the laws of society; be it the smoking of pot, the smashing up of a bar or restaurant, or the driving of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or even when only under suspension. Why this sudden abandonment by society of these formally sacrosanct individuals? Personally I think the reason is that the counter culture was all well and good so long as it remained in the newspapers and movies where it could hurt no one, at least no one in the mainstream. The counter culture are now the victims of their own success; their spread accompanied with an increase in hooliganism, panhandling and petty crime. No one wants to be bothered with fobbing off a panhandler while coming out of the subway. When threatened, organisms revert to subconscious group action, be it the huddling together when a rouge animal is in the vicinity or fleeing or fighting when under threat by that animal. In organized society adverse behavior in discouraged by the imposition of a penalty.
Yobs are of no threat to the police or the law courts and if the public are
content to have themselves pushed around by these louts, will not stand in
their
way. When the public get fed up they elect politicians who will enact tough
laws in order to counter the tiring behavior of the counter culture ;such as a
real ban on drugs and fire arms.A more drastic measure in my view would be to
make the stuff entirely legal thereby allowing nature to eliminate an
undesirable strain of the human race ,but of course this will never happen and
we have to just stumble on until either:
