July 22, 2008 C.E.M. Joad had properly defined decadence as the loss of the object. Such a momentous charge is not equivalent to, perhaps, jocularly complaining about whether or not more people are caught picking their noses in public; it is a highly serious matter with many quite disastrous consequences, for any country, if found to be genuinely true. G.K. Chesterton, in his The Thing or Why I Am a Catholic, wisely said of it: “To be wrong, and to be carefully wrong, that is the definition of decadence.” What sadly exists in America is really neither an energy crisis nor economic crisis; it is a profound failure of requisite political nerve based, moreover, upon a greatly devastating moral and spiritual crisis of an enormous magnitude, meaning the asserted apotheosis of nihilism as being synonymous with modern Americanism. A wide variety of interrelated factors and issues must, consequently, be here properly considered and rationally discussed. The material reality [like it or not] of contemporary Western civilization is, for instance, of a civilization heavily dependent upon petroleum and its manifold usages for its ever advancing standard of living, contrary to the (often unrecognized) nihilistic demands of the successful New Age religion/ideology of environmentalism. This is related, moreover, to the repaganization of the West. And, thus, there are necessary and involved consequences that exist as a result. Only a free-market economy, as another point, has been historically, empirically, proven to be able to actually deliver the increasing goods and services for a society. And, much more important than that fact, Christianity was once the successful motivating force for Western civilization for many centuries; but, the massive decline of Christian faith, and of Roman Catholicism in particular, has been matched to a substantial reduction of basic political nerve and ability, not an assumed “energy crisis.” There are those who foolishly think that the current, vast military, econo-political, postindustrial, etc. might that exists will, thus, forever sustain America while, for instance, just forgetting that even the Roman Empire once thought of itself as also being both perpetually invincible and invulnerable. But, internal rot eventually destroys all earthly empires, especially because of excessive decadence, degeneration, and decay of the national fiber. And, recorded history demonstrates that the decline of empires has taken fewer and fewer centuries to occur, as modernization and scientific technology have both kept apace, which has, thus, rapidly accelerated historical developments of great magnitudes. Ancient Carthage, infamous for nihilistically sacrificing its own young children at its religious festivals, yielded to Rome; but, the new Romans (read: Americans), nevertheless, wish to defeat the new Parthians (forgetting that the old Romans were finally unable to conquer the old Parthians) . So, for the modern United States, besides adventures in imperial ambition in foreign lands, there exist the real horrors of today’s ugly forms of human sacrifice: legalized abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia, the nihilistic celebrations of death, the unholy trinity. One yet observes, ironically, that the legal system, due to philosophical legal positivism, will heavily prosecute polygamists, while wildly rampant serial polygamy and serial polyandry are so freely aided through liberalized divorce; none of which is thought related to observed decadence, as the legally bastardized institution of marriage is, thus, legally prostituted on a merrily and verily grand scale. Of course, the vast majority of the American people look upon the nation’s people as, in general, being of the highest moral caliber imaginable. Why? Because, when all is said and done, and in spite of moral failures and spiritual difficulties of an extreme nature, they are really (good?) Americans. It is the absurd belief in the ideological doctrine of American exceptionalism, meaning that this nation is an exception to all of previously known and recorded human history because of its special kind of true greatness simply too unparalleled in all the past ages of man. (And, this was once the same kind of basic thinking that existed during the Roman Republic, mostly, though not totally, prior to its imperial phase.) It is an unmistakably clear part of the English Whig Theory (read: Progress deification) of reified history gone mad; among its interesting, contemporary expostulators is Rush Limbaugh, a true believer, who daily proves that he does speak with half a brain tied behind his back, as he rightfully claims this fact to be the truth of his orations and inspirations. And, he truly celebrates the American people as a logical part of his enthusiastic support for the nominalist thesis of historical exceptionalism, noted as a forever basic and integral part of domestic political conservatism. But, the vast majority of the American people blithely, supinely, do look on as the family, the basis of civilization, is necessarily demolished by the continuing and fully evil legalization of (one the biggest oxymorons) “same-sex marriage” (as with speaking about a total contradiction in basic logic: a dead-living organism). [Thinking that a constitutional amendment will save the family is a vivid part of the aforementioned worship of legal positivism as the very defining of absolute morality and ethics for a postmodern society.] Chesterton, even in the past century, had observed how easily the abnormal, that which is absurd, comes to increasingly replace the normal, inclusive, one can guess, of a wildly legalized sexual perversion as putative matrimony itself. It is, nonetheless, the immoral reification of gross blatant sodomy not just sanctioned but, moreover, promoted by judge-made law, an unconstitutional absurdity. One ought not to be fooled, however, that this is a mere simple demand for civil social/legal equality; superiority must necessarily be rendered to an aggressively novel institution, the “same-sex” marriage, because of its unique nature directly and always contrary to human biological nature itself. No true ideologists of equality ever really want just actual equality; even F. Engels is, e.g., quite famous for saying that the communists never meant an “equality of zero.” As so well put in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, all animals are equal but some are more equal than others. Only an extremely tiny minority of insane egalitarians ever really want the truly lowest common denominator of simplified existence for themselves, and everybody else in hell’s creation. What is needed, however, is what will not ever occur. A true statesman ought to come forward to do a Federalist-Hamiltonian restoration of republican constitutional (read: limited) government in the United States, contrary to the globalist-internationalist imperium that has, increasingly, existed since the late 1940s. With the consolidation of the national government directly resulting from the defeat of the Sothern Confederacy, constitutionalism has been increasingly corrupted by, among others, nonelected judges. The United States of America, since at least the 1930s, has had a rising, aggressive, imperial Federal judiciary, especially at the level of the US Supreme Court. Since the 1970s, moreover, there has been increasing amounts of judicial legislation and, starting at least in the 1990s and definitely into the 21st century, there has also been judicial political decisions that have entirely subverted the entire checks and balances that are supposed to exist. The (ignorant) majority of political conservatives, moreover, in 2008, idiotically applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the 2nd Amendment regarding a Washington, DC gun control law. It was an entirely dangerous precedent set by the Court to take upon itself a forever critical decision regarding the fundamental constitutional rights of the people; this is where it can supposedly either grant or abrogate legal/constitutional legitimacy regarding any such fundamental rights or civil liberties whatsoever of the citizenry. Instead of mindless approbation, the decision ought to have rightly provoked consternation and disgust and, moreover, genuine fear. From the time of Publius, in The Federalist, saying that the judiciary would be the least of the three branches of the Federal government, there has been, as is well noted above, a both terrible and very unconstitutional transformation, greatly seen in the 20th century, and becoming so much more highly manifest in the first decade of the present century. The US Supreme Court has certainly proven itself, crescively, much more dangerous than any imperial presidency or overweening US Congress. Nothing is being realistically done, however, to stop this bold usurpation of power directly contrary to the Constitution that acts as if it is an ongoing constitutional convention in and of itself; and yet, rule by the judiciary is a mere symptom or effect, not a cause, of political and constitutional degeneration and decline. It is, in fact, as another example, completely irrelevant if McCain or Obama gets elected. The point of no return has long been passed. How so? The USA has finally far exceeded what can be instructively called the Colonel Blimp attitude concerning perceived reality. There is a British antiwar film called: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, (which today, ironically, is usually thought of as a supposedly pro-war film). In one extremely poignant scene, concerning World War II, a captured German prisoner of war says that if the women of his country are automatically expected to fight and die, then that spells the true and final end of any viable notion as to fighting to preserve the homeland, meaning that the homeland’s formerly protected people are now simply part of the frontline of war itself. How, one might ask, does this thinking interestingly apply today? The American people are quite noticeably sanguine, for instance, about readily sending their precious daughters, wives, and even mothers to war as part of the actual combat forces. The object of defending the homeland (and purpose thereof), meaning those people capable of reproducing the human species as the final means of domestic civilizational survival, has been totally lost for the (lesser) sake of simply conducting a war; and, it is a war that does not immediately threaten the existence of the country as, e.g., compared to World War II. America is deliberately, knowingly, sending its precious homeland directly into death-dealing conflict. It is, at a minimum, a rather manifest form of insane idolatry by making the worship greater than the god, which acknowledges that the very purpose of (defensive) war making has been integrally negated and contradicted exceedingly so. Is it thought, perhaps, that no one can just correctly see what is, in fact, actually occurring within the nation’s materialist-dominated, consumerist, secularized culture? Is, among others, the Lord God Almighty really being successfully fooled? This is, therefore, an often unrecognized definition of true decadence, degeneracy, and nihilism of a rather high order that correctly describes the postmodern USA as to its so often alleged greatness; America is a country delving seriously into the ever heightened promotion of sodomite celebrations and, moreover, continuing, legal, multiple acts of massive human sacrifice (abortion – whether chemical or physical, infanticide, and euthanasia) on a truly titanic scale of Satanic endeavor no less. So, for now, idiocy must reign broadly triumphant, as patriotism is, of course, cited gloriously concerning having increasing numbers of females made available as democratic cannon fodder. But, this is not all concerning what is happening to Western civilization, besides, of course, America in particular. What of the supposed energy crisis? To actually abandon petroleum and all of its implications and multiple/myriad benefits means that the lifestyles of the vast majority of people in the Western world would have to radically change in a highly regressive fashion; robotics, due to the energy requirements involved, would not really replace the massive need for an increase in manual labor not seen since at least the 19th century (or before). Such a retrogressive reality is often never conceived of by the liberal and leftist critics of contemporary society and culture with their worship of the eco-religion. And, who ought to logically oppose the vicious, antihuman ideology of environmentalism the most? Primarily, the categories of: women, the elderly, the poor, and children, in that order. Somebody is going to be required to make up for the marked lack of labor-saving devices that are, thus, dependent upon maintaining a greatly advanced civilization based upon the cognate reality and necessity of higher and higher energy consumption. Of course, capitalism and capitalists will be blamed, by many critics, of the existing situation who will fault what they think of as the necessary failures of the free-market economy; only half the accusation is, however, really close to the truth. It is often not too well understood, for instance, that true entrepreneurs are not capitalists and vice versa. Capitalists want, for instance, government intervention in the economy to favor, of course, capitalism, meaning the support of those institutions that seek concentrations of wealth, especially inherited wealth, at the expense of the general society; thus, as a ready and prominent example, the Federal Reserve System is a clearly capitalist institution because it is ever involved in statist intervention in the economy. This is well noted by, among other sources, the Austrian School of Economics. Entrepreneurs, meaning those who genuinely support free-market economics, are always against any and every government intervention that interferes, directly or indirectly, with the workings of the market economy, such as tariffs, trade quotas, subsidies, other such corporate welfare measures, etc. Innovation, invention, risk, and advances in technologies are component parts of entrepreneurship that usually work best with limited government activity. Capitalism, on the other hand, always wants the corrupt existence of Big Government as to its understanding of proper politico-economic reality. The fiction of so-called stagflation (an oxymoron) as caused by nongovernmental forces gets propagandistically perpetuated by statists; only government controls the money creation (the fiat bills, meaning such legally permitted counterfeiting); if people did this, it gets called counterfeiting and, ironically, is illegal. Neither Big Labor nor Big Business can, therefore, manufacture legal tender; neither are, thus, ever responsible for inflation. Big Government is, therefore, fully compatible with the (often unacknowledged) tax upon the people called inflation; and, capitalists seeks to profit through many improper and unneeded distortions of supply and demand, as with, as major examples, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, logically caused by pro-capitalist interventionist regimes, not the wrongly condemned free-market that is properly favored by entrepreneurs. Thus, it is manifest and reasonable for entrepreneurship to be always opposed to capitalism because of essential support for free-market economics; another fair synonym for this latter concept would, in fact, be entrepreneurship. Those who innovate, create new markets, develop new natural resources, make inventions, and, in general, generate ways and means of creative capital formation and transmission for the development of free economic realities, situations, etc. without statist supports are the true upholders of free-market economics, never the (real or actual) capitalists. The latter are usually parasitic elements that latch on to economic conditions to favor not the workings of an entire economy but only or primarily the enrichment of themselves and their political adherents. So, people are usually very surprised to learn that not just people such as John McCain but also Barack Obama are naturally enthusiastic for capitalism, though the latter fellow may not publicly admit this truth. Both favor various forms and degrees of massive state intervention in the total economy, meaning Big Government, to better help capitalists by assisting them, in different ways, to avoid the often harsh consequences of true economic competition; this includes, of course, wrongly using taxpayer money to help those wealthy people who own the failed banks and other economic institutions, which is playing Robin Hood in reverse with public funds and corrupts economic activity, meaning the forces of supply and demand, the main basis of a free-market economy. Thus, there exists the concept, e.g., of what has been rightly called state capitalism because, among other reasons, capitalism and communism are not competitors or antagonists but true ideological allies; they are and will remain the two sides of the same coin of modernity favoring industrialism, secularism, materialism, nihilism, etc., meaning the temporal-oriented victory of modernism/secularism, the lust for earthly power, in all of contemporary civil society. Of course, it, unfortunately, is the realistic case that many who were formerly free-market supporters can become capitalists; this is since they think that may be the mostly or solely best way to avoid having to suffer the consequences of competition, the actions of supply and demand, in a free economy. Mainly speaking, capitalists really hate competition and do not want to see other people or institutions succeed, if they think that any true degree of such success many diminish or possibly threaten their wealth or further access to any future wealth. Interventionism is, not surprisingly, a true synonym for capitalism, meaning it is always, by definition, an anti-free-market perception of economic reality or economics, which used to be more honestly called political economy. Thus, statism and capitalism, interventionism and politico-economic collusion, are symbiotic partners. True free-market participants, meaning the authentic entrepreneurs, logically abhor capitalism; so, it is not surprising that those who subscribe to the thinking of the traditionalist right in America detest capitalism, while the vast majority of conservatives defend capitalism and, of course, capitalists, as does, for example, Rush Limbaugh, a prominent public defender and beneficiary of capitalism. Thus, all those who genuinely want a free economic system to operate anywhere in the world need to reject capitalism and its symbiotic partner, meaning communism/socialism (by whatever name), and instead promote all free-market activities that, logically, push forward needed entrepreneurship and its concomitant reality of true economic competition. This, also, means a total rejection of the ideology of conservatism and support for the genuine free-market position of the traditionalist right in American politics as a further solid and invigorating means of rejecting capitalism and its many moral, social, cultural, and economic evils. Why is this said? What gets called conservatism has, for at least the past 50 years, drifted and, sometimes, leaped toward the ideological Left; thus, Limbaugh has, repeatedly, referred to such people as Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, and others are having been, in fact, true conservatives, with his slippery slope pseudo-reasoning. Most recently, he has alleged that the late comic George Carlin had certain views, for instance, about environmentalism that were basically consistent with conservatism. This is, surely, a demonstration of pea-brained pseudo-intellectualism of a low order. Carlin, having been openly sympathetic to the Old Left was accepting of the progressiveness of modern society in terms of modernization contrary to the New Left, thus, his thinking was not at all congruent with conservatism regarding the environment; he was just a social democrat with old-fashioned views. Rush is, therefore, fundamentally ignorant of such important matters as the historico-genesis of ideas within the course of Western civilization; thus, he is a great and major spokesman for most conservative thought into the 21st century, of course. So, the last vestiges of the American republic are “legalistically” torn to shreds, during the continuing expansion of the imperial madness, as Rush and his merry and mindless cohorts cheer on the bemused and, thus, confused spectators in Plato’s Cave. Meanwhile, the here noted apotheosis of nihilism will probably, more to the direct point, just conveniently continue unabated in the land of the free and the home of the brave where manifest decadence reigns supreme and (mainly) unchecked (assuming, of course, it gets even noticed at all). God help America, few, relatively speaking, of its people will. And yet, in the spiritual, not purely temporal, realm of life, there is still the great hope that comes through faith in the Eternal Order, not the political order. What can revive the spiritual order in America and, moreover, Western civilization and still, in fact, exists as the most potent antidote to unwanted decadence? Though many would deny this truth, the best substantive defense against the various agonies of decay and degeneracy remains the orthodox, traditionalist understanding of the Roman Catholic Faith, especially with an adamant adherence to the traditional Latin Mass. As humans are imperfect (with the theological interpretation meaning that they are sinful), it offers not any supposed perfection on earth but an orientation toward the perfection of salvation beyond this world, meaning the eternity where people, their immortal souls, are to spend all of their final time. All attempts at terrene or intramundane salvation have logically produced hells on earth, not the often expected wonderful utopias. The alternative of proper Catholicism (as noted above) can guarantee that those souls who are genuinely faithful to the truth and obedient to all the requirements of redemption will, in fact, achieve their salvation. This is, interestingly, related to the Catholic Church as it was explicitly denominated or called at least as early as the 4th century AD in St. Augustine’s De Fide et Symbolo and his De Vera Religione, besides Pope St. Gregory I referring to it just as clearly in his Moralia in Job in the 6th century, among many other later citations. St. Cyprian, in his On the Unity of the Catholic Church, noted, earlier in the 3rd century, that there is and can only be one such truly understood church as to its universal validity and significance, which provides theological hope for all the people of this world. Why is there such a realistic and tangible hope? The ancient, Jewish religious hierarchy tried to totally destroy the early Church; it miserably failed, of course, as later did, among others, Roman Emperors, pagan barbarians, Arian and other ancient and medieval heretics, the so-called Protestant Reformation, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, Communism, Nazism, etc. The Roman Catholic Church is the final and invincible bulwark against all of materialism, nihilism, secularism, hedonism, atheism, agnosticism, rationalism, and all the other errors and ideologies of modernity and postmodernity as well. The armed and unarmed hatreds and haters of this world, moreover, logically direct their evil venom first and foremost against this particular religious institution because they do know, in fact, the actual and incontrovertible truth of what is so openly stated here. Even the well prepared and aggressive (internalized) attempt of the (nominalist) Modernists, rightly condemned by Pope St. Pius X, who had unfortunately succeeded in capturing the orientation of the Second Vatican Council, still failed to finally destroy Holy Mother Church, which now, as a great and glorious kind of “miracle,” is quite amazingly witnessing, of all things, a tremendous revival of the Latin Mass; this is especially true since Pope Benedict XVI’s magnificent motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of July 7, 2007. This reality is well documented through the expanding lists of such Masses published by the Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei. With that tremendous fact noted, the Modernists have definitely lost in their horrible attempt because, as is theologically well known, even the gates of Hell cannot prevail against the Roman Catholic Church. And, such will be the slow and steady, careful and deliberate, way out of the massive social, cultural, and moral decadence, the aforementioned apotheosis of nihilism, through highly requisite and extremely intensive spiritual revival.
