Jan. 26, 2008 Within a few days I will be receiving an advance copy of the book that my husband's doctor, Marwan Sabbagh has written. I mentioned Dr. Sabbagh in previous articles that I have written about Alzheimer's Disease and how it has affected my family but now I can actually share with all of you the work that he does and how I believe that work will eventually help to bring about a cure for this dreadful condition. There has been much published about Alzheimer's and I have read some of it but none of it impacted me like the words of Dr. Sabbagh since he is the doctor that has treated my husband and who's work I have seen first hand. It takes a special person to dedicate one's life to finding cures for what are considered incurable disorders. I can't think of anything more frustrating or discouraging than working for many years only to suffer set back after set back while waiting for that one moment in time when the right formula is found and the cure is in sight. Dr. Sabbagh views ALL of his research projects as the light at the end of the tunnel and he never gives up or turns away from the task before him. Whether it's Alzheimer's or Parkinson's or any of the many neurological diseases that rob people of their ability to function, he moves forward. As a care-giver, I can tell you that I know first hand what Alzheimer's can do to a person, a family...an existence. The man that I married 37 years ago no longer exists and he is only moderately affected. We are one of the more fortunate families who can still converse with our loved one and still enjoy his company. What we can't do is expect him to remember any of our conversations for more than a few minutes. We can't ask our loved one to fix himself a meal when we are ill nor can we leave them alone while we go to work or even to the grocery store. We care-givers are now tied to our loved one/patient and that is a 24 hour job. As an observer and a care-giver under the care of Dr. Marwan Sabbagh I have learned a lot and I have observed a lot and I have come to believe that knowledge IS power and that without his research and his gentle and diligent care my husband would not be as present as he currently is. I hope to cover some of the reasons why I believe that everyone should read Dr. Sabbagh's book when it comes out because ALL of us will either know someone indirectly or directly affected by this soul robbing disease. It isn't something that we may or may not ever encounter....we all will and that is a fact. The cure is coming and people like Dr. Sabbagh will be responsible for it's arrival and for that reason I want to cry out to everyone I can reach to read his book...to arm themselves with knowledge and to gain the power that his words hold. I will receive no payment and no special consideration for writing about Dr. Sabbagh's book. I have already benefited from his gentle care and his brilliant mind. It is now time for me to "pay it forward". My next article will be about Dr. Sabbagh's book and I will post all of the details as to how you can get it for yourselves. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling.
