Jan. 21, 2008 Despite the major news stories taking place all around the world many are still preoccupied with the sad story of Britney Spears and her custody battle. The many media outlets reporting on Britney don't know whether her peculiar behavior is a result of substance abuse, mental illness or a combination of both. What they DO know is that she sells and that we will buy. It is my opinion that Britney thrives on the media and that she can't exist without them following her around. No matter how many times she cries, "I'm scared" when surrounded by a flock of Paparazzi she continually subjects herself to their attention in a very purposeful way. When entering the parking area of a San Fernando Valley restaurant yesterday she had two choices; take the underground route and avoid most of the throng of media vultures or walk across an open parking lot with no protection. Guess which path Britney selected? No matter what she does Brit takes along a change of clothing (usually sans underwear) and makes herself totally available to the Paps. She is even dating one of them at present. When she should have been INSIDE of a courtroom fighting to see her children she instead decided to play games and draw attention to herself OUTSIDE of the courthouse. Obviously, the drama and attention was far more important to her than trying to regain visitation of her kids. Anyone with half a brain can see that Brit is a mess and that something is definitely not right with her behavior. No matter how many talking heads weigh in it is obvious even to a non-mental health professional that she has a major problem. There is an even greater problem though.....it is virtually impossible for anyone who actually cares about her well being to do anything to stop her from traveling down the self-destructive road she has chosen. To appoint a Guardian who can oversee her behavior and look out for her is a very high burden to meet and thus far, it has been impossible to do so. While Hillary battle Barrack, the wars rage on and the nightly news continues it's endless coverage of the ever-increasing stories of murdered pregnant woman and other atrocities Britney Spears continues to claim a good sized portion of the news coverage in all quarters. Whether it be on a major network channel or a cable outlet, Britney is the number one story these days. Perhaps it is so fascinating to so many because we wonder how someone who seems to have achieved what many of us aspire too...wealth and fame and at the very least, a comfortable lifestyle, could be acting in such a bizarre way. Maybe the very fact that Spears has achieved such wealth and fame at such a young age and has seemingly done so without having a whole lot of talent is at the heart of the fascination. Was Britney's upbringing to blame? Is it the fault of her ambitious Mother or the fact that her Father is an alcoholic? Is it because her family has a history of mental illness and suicide? Is it simply because she has never had any guidance in how to deal with the fame. Maybe it's all of the above and maybe it's a symptom of the greed that substitutes for parenting in many families. As it stands we will watch this sad drama play itself out and watch with extreme interest how it all ends. Those who are close to Britney will also watch as she either comes to grips with her obvious manic behavior or they will sob at her graveside when she goes too far and does herself in. The law has it's limitations and one of those is trying to force controls on an adult who isn't displaying criminal behavior or who is not posing a danger to others. The law cannot prevent Britney from self destructing. Britney Spears is on her own...it will be up to her if she ever sees her children again or if she drives herself over the abyss to insanity or death. It will also continue to be the lead story for most media outlets and we will have a ringside seat at the circus that is the life of Britney Spears. Let's hope that if nothing else, some parent somewhere sees what has happened and does not follow in the footsteps of Britney's parents. And yes, for the record, even though Spears is an adult legally, I DO blame her parents for part of this. I DO NOT blame the media because they would not be covering this story so intensely if they had no audience to watch it and demand that it be reported. At one time I felt that they were responsible for part of the fiasco that we have been watching. I no longer find fault with them since Britney herself is courting them and feeding their need for sleaze. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling.
