The Learnings Of 2007

By L.J. Chapman
Jan. 5, 2008

Every year, in an effort to amuse myself, I write a little something to chronicle the things I've learned over the past 365 days. Some of is deeply thoughtful, much is things I should have realized earlier, but didn't, so it's included here. That being said:

Ladies and Gentlemen... The Learnings of 2007

1. No matter how much you hope and pray, your precious baby boy will grow up, turn 5, go to Kindergarten, leaving you behind for a bunch of kids his own age who he now likes to hang out with more than you.

2. To quote my future mother-in-law: "Relationships are hard. There were many times I've wanted to leave my husband, but I didn't, because I knew that's not what marriage is all about." To sum up: Relationships are hard work, deal with it. (I've learned to take the advice of a woman who has been married nearly 40 years.)

3. Marijuana is illegal. If you get caught with it, you will be arrested and go sit in a holding cell for 5 hours until your dad bails you out ($200! Thanks Dad!). When you go in front of a judge, he will not care if you've never been arrested before, cause you're 27 and you should know better, so he will fine you $1100, put you on probation, and tell you to go away... and you will listen.

4. A good job at a great company can and will make all the difference in your life. You will never know what self-respect is until you can pay your rent, on time, every month, and still have money to buy your kid Christmas presents.

5. Never judge a book by it's cover. Just because you originally thought that you worked with a large group of self-help motivational speakers, doesn't mean that they won't turn out to be a large group of the coolest people you've ever met.

6. Friends are good.

7. Life is futile. There is nothing you can do to stop yourself or your loved ones from dying, so the only thing you can do is be happy and love everyone while you're here. Immerse your soul in love.

8. Never trust a used car salesman. No offense to used car salesmen, but they will lie to you and sell you a car that will nickel and dime you to death. Sadly, they have the cars, so they have the upper hand... such is life.

9. You are never stuck where you are. No matter how low you can get, you can always go up. And up is a nice place. Work hard and go up.

10. And finally, accepting the world around you and learning to appreciate the things around you will finally make you content and happy, which in turn will get rid of that feeling of regret that you never ran off to the big city to make a name for yourself. Life is good.

And that, my friends is my end of year ramblings. Happy New Year all! I hope it's a healthy and happy one.
