Dec. 16, 2008 Femme was a 1983 song by Dalida, an Egyptian lady who sang and lived in France. It is based on an older song by Charlie Chaplin called Smile , which appeared in 1936, in the movie Modern Times. The cultural hiatus between the French and Anglo-American attitudes towards life is absolutely oceanic, if the drift of these two songs is any indication. We have a near Sunday-school song turned into a siren call, merely by rewriting the lyrics in French. The melody can be heard at this URL: http://midistudio.com/midi/Julio_INT/Smile.mid The lyrics of Femme appear next below. I have translated the song specifically for this article. Though I am not an authority on French, I'm sure I have it right. Woman Woman, Like you I am a woman. My heart breaks into flames over nothing. When I am amorous, I become a happy woman, Quick to every folly, To leave everything in the middle of the night To go follow at all costs My chance. Woman, Like you I am a woman, Melody or melodrama, Sometimes stubborn but often a fragile woman. If sometimes my heart is weary, In his arms I live again, Then I simply am His woman. With him I am a woman, a woman. Woman, Like you I am a woman. My heart breaks into flames over nothing. When I am amorous, I become a happy woman, If sometimes my heart is weary, In his arms I live again, Then I simply am His woman. Woman, Like you I am a woman, Both joy and tears. I create the semblance of leaving In order better to keep him, And too bad if that doesn’t work. It’s all the same to me, I become sentimental And a woman, his woman Here are the lyrics for Smile. Smile Smile though your heart is aching. Smile even though it’s breaking. >br> When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by, If you smile through your fear and sorrow, Smile and maybe tomorrow You’ll see the sun come shining through for you. Light up your face with gladness. Hide every trace of sadness. Although a tear may be ever so near, That’s the time you must keep on trying. Smile, what’s the use of crying? You’ll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile. That’s the time you must keep on trying. Smile, what’s the use of crying? You’ll find that life is still worthwhile If you just smile. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
