Dec. 3, 2008 The newly elected Canadian PM Stephen Harper is about to be replaced by a coalition of the three opposition parties, the leader of one, to be nominated as the new PM, just recently suffering a drubbing in the election, one having a platform consisting of the taking of Quebec out of confederation, the other a socialist who has been campaigning with little success throughout his political career. If this coalition gets in it will be one more nail in the coffin of the Canadian Federation, (the separation party having long counted on this in order to secede). Sitting back and taking a pause I find that this in not such an alarming prospect. History is unfolding as it should. The large continental landmass type of super states have come to the end of their natural lives and, just as the Russian Empire has met its end, so too will the US. Why even an analyst of the US intelligence community has predicted that the US will no longer be the dominant world power within another twenty years. This is only logical as the US is but an extension of Europe and has through out its existence been a guardian of this continent and the author of the British Empire. In the first instance Europe could hardly have survived World War Two and the cold war if not for the tremendous resources of the US. In the latter case Great Britain could hardly have amassed the wealth necessary for its colonial expansion if not for the great trade occurring with the old colony following the expansion across the Appalachians- previously forbidden by the Proclamation Act following the seven year war. There is no USSR left to deter. The war on terror can be fought with out US help as the various European countries have been the prime targets of Soviet backed groups for the last forty years or so and have managed to hold their own. As for a new US led enlightenment, it doesn't seem to be in the works, the mention of US cultural influence a snide way to sneer at its recipient. So just what is the purpose of the US (and Canada come to That)? At the end of World war Two the Battle ship ebbed into decline, the military situation having changed drastically with the development of superior naval and shore based aircraft. So too has the need for the lage landmass based countries with the development of easy and cheap travel allowing an invading army to slip across long indefensible borders.
Stephen Harper the Canadian PM might succeed in holding off the powers of succession .He could appeal to the Governor General to call an election. She could refuse. He could then take it to the Supreme Court of Canada arguing among other things bias of the delegate, as she is of French and Quebec loyalty, her husband in fact a secessionist. But what is the point? History is merely following its natural course, the breakup of Canada and then the US but a matter of time.
