Aug. 25, 2008 I have just picked up a book of essays from the local library written by Chinese Cosmologist Fang Lizhi. His original field of endeavor was in the realm of physics but due to past transgressions Mao had him confined to a cow shed and then sent to work in a mine .During this period he was unable to continue his studies and so made do with what was available; a book on cosmology thus turning his mind in this direction. Upon release with the end of the Cultural Revolution he was subsequently given a post at a prestigious university where he continued to pursue his new interest. He came across a startling fact; Marxist Leninism is based upon the supposition that the universe has always existed and is infinite, therefore the make up of bourgeois society is inherently flawed as it derives its legitimacy from religion (at least in the west).The original Marxist Leninist line is that as the universe has always existed there is no need to explain a first cause as with an endless universe there is no first cause, i.e. no need for any one or thing to create it. Similarly with an infinite universe there is no one area for God to reside, and an endless universe by definition holding vast areas outside of his influence. Enter Einstein and his theory of a universe exploding and then contracting upon itself due to its own gravitational pull confounding the dialectic order of things where Marxist Leninism is the sole guiding light of science. With the end of the regime of Deng Xingjian the age of Chinese openness is no more. Fang has to hide out in the Chinese US embassy to be eventually whisked to the US and freedom .He goes on to lecture and study throughout the west in the process winning a Nobel Prize; a thing sadly never achieved by any citizen of the PRC. I have always had doubts about Marxist doctrine on how to organize society. Obviously a great deal of thought went into the plan involving the actual physical manipulation of men, machine and materiel .Pages and pages were produced. A reenactment is played and lo and behold the whole thing stinks. It is bulky and cumbersome requiring great concentration making those playing lose track of the purpose of the rules, the economics of the thing impossible as the figures needed never appear at the same time .Of course the whole thing has to played, then revised, and then re-played and revised again ad infinitum until a workable set of plans ensue. (Mao thought and Deng reforms.)
It seems to me that the Communist basic premise is now deeply flawed with the appearance of Einstein’s big bang explanation regarding the beginnings of the universe. Whether God exists or not is not the point, the point now being: can Marxist Leninist theory claim to be the basis for understanding the universe and everything in it if the reason for dismissing all previous teaching is now placed in doubt -namely that the universe is eternal having no beginning and no end in space and time.
