Liberals Espouse Mans Universal Longing For Dictatorship
By Mike Haran
Aug. 17, 2008
I was reading Dostoyevsky’s THE GRAND INQUISITOR and got to thinking that he had hit the nail on the head regarding the liberal’s acceptance of dictatorships. Briefly the piece deals with a conversation between Ivan and Alyosha .Ivan is telling of his poem dealing with the return of Christ during the days of the Spanish Inquisition .He has just returned to earth after an absence of 1500 years and is arrested by the Inquisitor. In the dungeon he speaks with Christ .The gist of the one sided conversation is that Christ has betrayed mankind .Mankind for eons had the religion and social system it most desired until taken away by the Christians. The three things which man bases his life on giving him a reason for living are:
- miracles
- mystery
- authority
Previously this had been part of all government, from the days of Summer and Akkad to the republic of Rome. Enter Christ and his teaching guaranteeing freedom and equality for all under a just god. Ivan in his poem faults him for: not performing miracles by failing to change stone to bread when he fed the multitude; for not coming down from the cross on which he was crucified; for not granting a universal harsh dictatorship - miracle, mystery and authority. He argues that the one thing the lower levels of humanity are afraid of is disorder and confusion which Christianity imposes with its freedom. In the fifth century this was corrected with the imposition of the harsh authority of the Roman church backed up by the popes and the Jesuits. The coming of Luther and his reformation again bought about confusion with all his talk about freedom and open discussion. The Grand Inquisitor is dedicated to correcting Christ’s work. He lets him go to disappear in
the dark squares of the Vatican knowing that man kind with never go along with his brand of Christianity. He sees a world where a few hundred thousand rule the millions with an iron fist distributing to them the bread they make with their own hands ,knowing that they would never share it voluntarily. The few hundred thousand rulers will keep the millions happy ,reinforcing their ignorance while they themselves bear the bleak knowledge that there is no afterlife.
Do not the liberals appear to appeal to this side of human nature with their never ending harping on the faults of the democracies and their turning a blind eye to the crimes of the former soviet union, present day PRC, Cuba and Venezuela?
Those who demonstrate with monotonous regularity at meetings of the WTO etc while falling to do the same thing against the governments of the dictatorships are in the category of those who reject freedom .
Is not the evidence for the universal longing for mystery and miracles all around us from the popularity of such shows as Art Bell to the constant questioning of such things as the assaination of JFK and the fascination with UFO's big foot and other unproven and doubtfull phenomena?
